“मूर्खों के राज्य में” ए. के. रामानुजन द्वारा लिखी गई एक व्यंग्यात्मक और बौद्धिक रूप से प्रेरक कहानी है। यह कहानी एक ऐसे विचित्र राज्य की है जहाँ सब कुछ सामान्य समझ के विपरीत होता है। वहाँ लोग रात में काम करते हैं और दिन में सोते हैं। खाने-पीने की चीजें भी बहुत सस्ती होती हैं। राज्य का राजा और उसका मंत्री भी मूर्ख होते हैं और बिना सोचे-समझे अजीब कानून बना देते हैं। जब एक गुरु और उसका शिष्य इस राज्य में आते हैं, तो वे वहाँ की अजीब व्यवस्था को देखकर हैरान रह जाते हैं। इसके बाद जो घटनाएँ घटती हैं, वे हास्य और विडंबना से भरी होती हैं, जो मूर्खता और अज्ञानता के खतरों को उजागर करती हैं। यह कहानी यह संदेश देती है कि बुद्धिमत्ता और विवेक के बिना सत्ता चलाना समाज के लिए हानिकारक हो सकता है।
📚 Summary (English):
The story takes place in a kingdom ruled by a foolish king and his equally foolish minister. In this strange land, the king orders that everyone must stay awake at night and sleep during the day. Anyone disobeying these rules is punished. Everything in the market, including food, costs the same—just one duddu (a very low currency), regardless of the quantity.
One day, a guru and his disciple arrive in the kingdom and are surprised by its odd customs. Though the guru decides to leave, the disciple stays behind, lured by the abundance of cheap food. Eventually, trouble arises when a robbery leads to a chain of bizarre events involving a merchant’s house wall collapsing and killing a thief. The blame for the death keeps shifting—from the merchant to the mason, the dancer, and even the goldsmith. Ultimately, the king decides that someone must be executed to maintain justice.
The disciple is wrongly chosen as the scapegoat for the execution. In a twist of events, the guru returns and uses his wit to trick the king into believing that dying at that moment and place would lead to salvation. The foolish king and minister, desiring the “glory” for themselves, end up ordering their own execution in place of the disciple.
After their deaths, the people request the guru and disciple to become their new rulers. They agree, but only after restoring sensible laws. The kingdom is eventually transformed into a land of wisdom and justice.
The story satirizes the idea of foolish authority and blind obedience. It also underlines the importance of intelligence, presence of mind, and rational governance. The guru’s clever thinking and calmness in a dangerous situation save his disciple and bring order to the kingdom.

यह कहानी एक ऐसे राज्य की है जहाँ राजा और उसका मंत्री दोनों मूर्ख होते हैं। उन्होंने राज्य में अजीब नियम बना रखे हैं — जैसे सभी लोग रात में काम करें और दिन में सोएं। बाज़ार में हर वस्तु की कीमत एक समान होती है — चाहे वह अनाज हो या फल, सब कुछ केवल एक ‘दुड्डू’ में मिलता है।
एक दिन एक गुरु और उसका शिष्य इस राज्य में आते हैं। गुरु को वहाँ की विचित्र व्यवस्था पसंद नहीं आती, इसलिए वह वापस चला जाता है। लेकिन शिष्य सस्ते भोजन के लालच में वहीं रुक जाता है। आगे एक चोरी की घटना होती है, जिसमें एक दीवार गिरने से चोर की मौत हो जाती है। इसके बाद मौत का दोष एक व्यक्ति से दूसरे पर डाला जाने लगता है — व्यापारी, राजमिस्त्री, नर्तकी और सुनार तक।
अंत में राजा तय करता है कि किसी को सजा दी जानी चाहिए, और शिष्य को फांसी देने का आदेश देता है। इसी बीच गुरु वापस आता है और अपनी चतुराई से राजा को यह विश्वास दिला देता है कि जो इस विशेष समय और स्थान पर मरेगा, वह सीधे स्वर्ग जाएगा। मूर्ख राजा और मंत्री उस “सुअवसर” को अपने लिए लेना चाहते हैं और स्वयं फांसी पर चढ़ जाते हैं।
इसके बाद जनता गुरु और शिष्य से आग्रह करती है कि वे राज्य का शासन संभालें। गुरु सहमत होता है, लेकिन शर्त रखता है कि अब से सब कुछ बुद्धिमत्ता और सामान्य समझ के अनुसार होगा। इस प्रकार, राज्य में शांति और व्यवस्था वापस आ जाती है।
