The story “Bholi” by K.A. Abbas is a powerful narrative of transformation, dignity, and self-worth. Bholi, whose real name was Sulekha, was once a healthy child. However, she fell from a cot when she was just ten months old, injuring her head and possibly affecting her brain. Later, at the age of two, she suffered from smallpox, which left her face disfigured with deep pockmarks. This, along with her stammering, made her talk very little, and people often ignored or pitied her.
Bholi belonged to a village where education for girls was not common. When the Tehsildar visited the village, he told Ramlal, Bholi’s father, to send his daughters to school, arguing that it was now important to educate girls and that Ramlal, being a revenue official, should set an example. However, Ramlal’s wife opposed the idea , fearing it would affect their chances of marriage. Eventually, she agreed to send only Bholi to school because she considered her unmarriageable due to her looks and stammer.
Bholi was terrified at the thought of going to school, fearing punishment and the unknown. Ramlal was a prosperous farmer, but he was worried about Bholi’s future because of her appearance and speech.
When Bholi reached school, she was shy and nervous to see so many girls. She was fascinated by the colourful pictures of birds and flowers on the wall. The teacher asked her name, but Bholi stammered and broke into tears. However, the teacher’s kind and gentle tone comforted Bholi, and for the first time, she felt safe and hopeful. Eventually, with encouragement, she could say her full name, and the teacher assured her that she would speak clearly in a month.
Years passed, and the village developed with a school and better infrastructure. A marriage proposal came for Bholi from Bishamber, a wealthy man, older and balding, but rich and from another village. Bholi’s mother didn’t consult her about the marriage because she assumed Bholi would never find another match. Ramlal was worried because Bishamber was much older and had children from a previous marriage.
The wedding was grand with a lavish procession. Ramlal was both happy and relieved that someone was marrying Bholi. However, when Bishamber saw Bholi’s face, he demanded a dowry of 5,000 rupees, claiming he hadn’t seen her scars before. Ramlal paid the amount, but when Bholi’s veil was lifted again, everyone was shocked at her determined reaction. She refused to marry Bishamber, saying she would not marry a greedy man.
Bholi declared that she would remain unmarried and serve her parents and teach in the same school that changed her life. This decision shocked her family but showed how education had transformed her into a confident, self-respecting woman.

कुछ वर्षों में गाँव में बदलाव आया—सड़कें बनीं, स्कूल खुले। भोली के लिए बिशम्बर नामक एक अमीर लेकिन उम्रदराज व्यक्ति का रिश्ता आया । उसकी मां ने भोली से शादी के लिए राय नहीं ली क्योंकि उन्हें लगा कि उसे कोई और नहीं मिलेगा। रामलाल को चिंता थी कि बिशम्बर बहुत बड़ा है और उसके बच्चे भी हैं ।
भोली की शादी धूमधाम से हुई, और रामलाल गर्व महसूस कर रहा था। लेकिन जब बिशम्बर ने भोली का चेहरा देखा, तो उसने पाँच हजार रुपए दहेज की मांग रख दी। भोली की दूसरी बार घूंघट उठते ही, वह सबको चौंकाती है। उसने शादी से इनकार कर दिया और कहा कि वह एक लालची व्यक्ति से शादी नहीं करेगी।
