The story begins with Aram, a nine-year-old boy, who is astonished to see his cousin Mourad sitting on a beautiful white horse one morning. Aram comes from the Garoghlanian tribe, known for honesty and integrity, despite their poverty. The tribe prided itself on never stealing or cheating anyone.
Mourad, twelve years old, was considered eccentric but adventurous. When Aram asked where the horse came from, Mourad claimed they had not stolen it, but only “borrowed” it. Though doubtful, Aram convinced himself that it was acceptable, as he too was tempted to ride. His longing for adventure overpowered his moral hesitation.
For two weeks, the boys enjoyed secret morning rides. Mourad loved animals and had a natural bond with them. The horse responded to him gently, though it was wild with Aram, who had difficulty controlling it. Their fun, however, was overshadowed by the fear of being caught.
Soon they discovered that the horse belonged to John Byro, a local farmer, who had already complained of its disappearance. One day, while the boys were riding, they unexpectedly met John Byro.
