The story “A Letter to God” by Gregorio López y Fuentes revolves around a poor farmer named Lencho who lives on the top of a hill with his family. He is a sincere and hardworking man who relies completely on his crops for his livelihood. His region is dry and needs rain for the crops to grow. One day, the long-awaited rain finally arrives, and Lencho becomes happy. However, his joy is short-lived as the rain soon turns into a severe hailstorm that destroys the entire field. Lencho is left heartbroken and worried about how he will feed his family.
Despite the loss, Lencho has unshakable faith in God. He believes that God will not let him starve. So, he writes a letter to God, requesting 100 pesos to re-sow his crops and survive until the next harvest. He posts the letter with full belief that it will reach God.
When the postmaster sees the letter addressed to God, he is surprised. At first, he laughs, but later he is touched by Lencho’s strong faith. He decides to help him. He asks his fellow post office employees to contribute money, and he adds some from his own salary. Together, they collect 70 pesos and send it to Lencho in an envelope, signed “God.”
Lencho receives the money and is not surprised. But when he counts it, he becomes angry, thinking that some of it has been stolen. He writes another letter to God, asking not to send the money through the post office, because the employees are “a bunch of crooks.”
This story beautifully portrays themes of faith, innocence, kindness, and irony. It teaches us that even though people may misunderstand each other, acts of kindness come from pure intentions.

“ईश्वर के नाम एक पत्र” कहानी ग्रेगोरियो लोपेज़ वाई फुएन्तेस द्वारा लिखी गई है। यह एक गरीब किसान लेनचो की कहानी है जो एक पहाड़ी पर अपने परिवार के साथ रहता है। वह एक मेहनती और ईमानदार किसान है जिसकी पूरी आजीविका खेती पर निर्भर है। उसके क्षेत्र में सूखा पड़ता है, इसलिए वह बारिश की प्रतीक्षा करता है। एक दिन, आखिरकार बारिश होती है और लेनचो बहुत खुश हो जाता है। लेकिन उसकी खुशी ज्यादा देर नहीं टिकती क्योंकि बारिश जल्द ही ओलावृष्टि में बदल जाती है, जिससे उसकी पूरी फसल बर्बाद हो जाती है।

जब डाकघर का पोस्टमास्टर यह पत्र पढ़ता है, तो पहले उसे हँसी आती है, लेकिन फिर वह लेनचो की गहरी आस्था से प्रभावित होता है। वह अपने साथियों से पैसे इकट्ठा करता है और खुद भी योगदान देता है। वे मिलकर 70 पेसो इकट्ठा करते हैं और उसे एक लिफाफे में रखकर “God” के नाम से लेनचो को भेज देते हैं।
लेनचो को जब पैसे मिलते हैं, तो वह हैरान नहीं होता। लेकिन जब वह गिनता है, तो नाराज़ हो जाता है। उसे लगता है कि डाक कर्मचारियों ने बाकी पैसे चुरा लिए हैं। वह ईश्वर को दूसरा पत्र लिखता है कि अगली बार पैसे डाक से न भेजें, क्योंकि वहाँ के कर्मचारी “चोरों का झुंड” हैं।
