In the poem, Frost presents two contrasting ideas about how the world might end—either in fire or in ice. The poet says he has experienced desire and believes it is powerful enough to destroy the world. But he also acknowledges that hatred (ice) is equally strong and destructive. Thus, both emotions have the potential to bring ruin.
