The story “Madam Rides the Bus” revolves around an eight-year-old girl named Valliammai, lovingly called Valli. She is a curious and intelligent child who lives in a small village in South India. Valli’s favorite pastime is to stand at the doorway of her house and watch the happenings on the street. Among all, what fascinates her the most is the bus that passes by her village every hour. She eagerly listens to the conversations of passengers and gathers every detail about the bus journey — the fare, the distance, and the duration.
One day, she learns that the bus fare to the town is thirty paise and the trip takes forty-five minutes. Valli starts saving every coin carefully, avoiding spending on candies or fairs, to collect the exact amount for the journey. One fine day, when her mother is asleep, Valli finally takes the bold step. She boards the bus alone to fulfill her dream.
The conductor, amused by her confidence, jokingly calls her “Madam.” During the journey, Valli observes everything with great excitement — the trees running backward, green fields, and lively scenes outside. She proudly refuses to accept any help, showing her independent nature. At one point, she notices a young cow running wildly in front of the bus, which makes her laugh heartily.
However, her happiness fades on the return journey when she sees the same cow lying dead on the road. This moment deeply affects her, making her realize the harsh reality of life and death. कंडक्टर उसकी समझदारी और आत्मविश्वास देखकर मुस्कुराता है और उसे “मैडम” कहकर बुलाता है। वल्ली खिड़की से बाहर झाँकती है और खेतों, पेड़ों तथा घरों को तेज़ी से पीछे जाते हुए देखकर खुश होती है। एक जगह वह सड़क पर भागती हुई गाय को देखकर ज़ोर से हँसती है। लेकिन लौटते समय वही गाय सड़क पर मरी हुई दिखती है, जिससे उसका दिल भर आता है। यह अनुभव उसे जीवन और मृत्यु की सच्चाई से परिचित कराता है।
