“Mijbil the Otter” is an autobiographical story by Gavin Maxwell that tells how he adopted an otter and the special bond they shared. After his pet dog’s death, the author decided to keep an otter as a pet. While living in Iraq, his friend suggested he should get one from the Tigris marshes. Soon, an otter was brought to him as a gift. The author named him Mijbil, or Mij for short.
At first, Mijbil was shy and frightened, hiding under the author’s bed. But gradually, he began to trust his new owner. He loved water and would spend hours playing in the bathtub, experimenting with everything he could find. Mijbil’s playful and curious nature made him a source of joy and amusement for Maxwell.
When the author had to return to England, it was difficult to travel with Mijbil. He had to pack the otter inside a box for the flight, and due to airline rules, Mijbil was kept in the luggage section.
