Answer
Biodiversity is immensely rich in wildlife and cultivated species, diverse in form and function, but closely integrated in a system through multiple networks of interdependencies.
It is important for human lives because the human beings, along with the biodiversity, form a complete web of ecological system in which we are only a part and are very much dependent on this system for our own existence.
वन्य जीवन और कृषि फसल उपजातियों में अत्यधिक जैव विविधताएँ पाई जाती हैं। यह आकार और कार्य में विभिन्न हैं, परन्तु अंतरनिर्भरताओं के जटिल जाल द्वारा एक तंत्र में गुँथी हुई है।

(ii) How have human activities affected the depletion of flora and fauna? Explain.

Answer
Several human activities have affected the depletion of flora and fauna and has led to decline in India’s biodiversity. The main factors responsible for this damage are:
(1) Habitat destruction, mainly due to overpopulation leading to expansion of agriculture, mining, industrialisation and urbanisation and consequent wiping out of large forest areas.
(2) Hunting and poaching and illegal trade of animal skin, tusk, bones, teeth, horns, etc have lead many speices to the verge of extinction.
(3) Environmental pollution, poisoning of water bodies due to discharge of industrial effluents, chemicals, wastes, etc. leading to animal deaths.
(4) Forest fires often induced by shifting cultivation wiping out valuable forests and wildlife.
कुछ मानव क्रियाएँ प्राकृतिक वनस्पतिजात और प्राणिजात के ह्रास का कारण बनती हैं। उनमें से मुख्य कारक निम्नलिखित हैं-
(1) बड़े पैमाने पर कृषि का विस्तार, औद्योगीकरण-शहरीकरण अर्थव्यवस्था की माँग के फलस्वरूप वृहत् वन क्षेत्रों की कटाई वन्य-जीव के आवास के विनाश का कारण बनती हैं।
(2) जंगली जानवरों का शिकार कर उनके चमड़ों, हाथीदांत तथा सींगों के अवैध व्यापार के लिए मारा जाता है जो विभिन्न जातियों के विलुप्त होने के मुख्य कारण हैं।
(3) पर्यावरणीय प्रदूषण, कारखानों से निकला कचरा, रसायन, अपशिष्ट आदि जल को जहरीला बनाती है जो जानवरों की मौत का कारण है।

(i) Describe how communities have conserved and protected forests and wildlife in India?
(i) भारत में विभिन्न समुदायों ने किस प्रकार वनों और वन्य जीव संरक्षण और रक्षण में योगदान किया है? विस्तारपूर्वक विवेचना करें।
Answer
Indian forests are home to different communities. These communities have a complex relationship with their environment. The Mundas and the Santhal of Chhota Nagpur region worship Mahua and Kadamba trees; the tribals of Orissa and Bihar worship the tamarind and mango trees. Similarly, the Bishnois of Rajasthan hold the antelopes in high reverence. For these communities, particular flora and fauna are integral to their identity, so they take a number of steps to protect the same. Villagers around the Sariska Reserve have opposed mining activities in the region as these activities endanger wildlife. Villagers in the Alwar district of Rajasthan have banned hunting and lumbering activities in a 1200 hectare area they have marked as Bhairodev Dakav ‘Sonchuri’. Such activities have helped preserve patches of virgin forest land.
वन हमारे देश में कुछ प्रजातियों के आवास भी हैं। इन समुदायों का उनके पर्यावरण के साथ जटिल रिश्ता होता है। छोटानागपुर क्षेत्र में मुंडा और संथाल जनजातियाँ महुआ और कदम्ब के पेड़ों की पूजा करते हैं। उड़ीसा और बिहार की जनजातियाँ शादी के दौरान इमली और आम के पेड़ों की पूजा करती हैं। इसी प्रकार राजस्थान में बिश्नोई गाँवों के आसपास काले हिरण, चिंकारा, नीलगाय और मोरों को कोई नुकसान नहीं पहुंचाता। कुछ क्षेत्रों में स्थानीय समुदाय सरकारी अधिकारियों के साथ मिलकर अपने आवास स्थलों के संरक्षण में जुटे हैं क्योंकि इसी से ही दीर्घकाल में उनकी आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति हो सकती है। सरिस्का बाघ रिजर्व में राजस्थान के गावों के लोग वन्य जीव रक्षण अधिनियम के तहत वहाँ से खनन कार्य बंद करवाने के लिए संघर्षरत हैं। राजस्थान के अलवर जिले में 5 गांवों के लोगों ने तो 1,200 हेक्टेयर वन भूमि भैरोंदेव डाकव ‘सोंचुरी’ घोषित कर दी जिसके अपने ही नियम कानून हैं, जो शिकार वर्जित करते हैं।

Answer
Good practices towards conserving forest and wildlife are plenty. Nowadays, many non-governmental organisations are working towards creating public awareness for conserving depleting forest cover and vanishing wildlife. Central and state governments in India have set up national parks and wildlife sanctuaries to protect forests and endangered species in wildlife. A recently developing practice towards conservation is the search for different conservation measures. Biodiversity is the new by-word of good practices towards conserving forest and wildlife. Various communities, especially in tribal areas, who are dependent on forests for their living are now taking an active role in this form of conservation.
वन और वन्य जीव संरक्षण के लिए कई सही नीतियाँ अपनाई गयी हैं। ऐसे कई गैर सरकारी संगठन भी हैं जो वन और वन्य जीव संरक्षण के प्रति जागरूकता फैला रहे हैं। 1960 और 1970 के दशकों के दौरान, पर्यावरण संरक्षकों में माँग पर भारत सरकार ने भारतीय वन्यजीवन (रक्षण) अधिनियम लागू किया गया जिसमें वन्य-जीवों के आवास-रक्षण के कई प्रावधान थे। केन्द्रीय सरकार व कई राज्य सरकारों ने राष्ट्रीय उद्यान और वन्य जीव पशुविहार स्थापित किये| विभिन्न समुदाय खासकर आदिवासी समूह जो जीवन-यापन के लिए पूरी तरह से वन और वन्य जीवन पर निर्भर हैं, वन्य जीवन के संरक्षण में सक्रिय भूमिका निभा रहे हैं।
