The story begins with a child going to a fair with his parents during the spring season. Along the way, the child is captivated by nature’s beauty and the sights and sounds of the fair. He sees toys in shop windows, garlands, balloons, and sweetmeats. He keeps asking his parents to buy these things, but they gently refuse or divert his attention.
When they reach the fairground, the child is mesmerized by the snake charmer and the roundabout. He asks for a ride but suddenly realizes that he has been separated from his parents. Panic-stricken, the child begins to cry and searches frantically for them in the crowd. A kind stranger finds him and tries to comfort him by offering all the toys, sweets, and rides the boy had wanted earlier. But the child now rejects everything.
He keeps crying and repeating, “I want my mother, I want my father.” His previous desires now seem meaningless. The child’s complete disinterest in material possessions once he is lost reveals the intense emotional bond he shares with his parents.
