When they reach the fairground, the child is mesmerized by the snake charmer and the roundabout. He asks for a ride but suddenly realizes that he has been separated from his parents. Panic-stricken, the child begins to cry and searches frantically for them in the crowd. A kind stranger finds him and tries to comfort him by offering all the toys, sweets, and rides the boy had wanted earlier. But the child now rejects everything.
He keeps crying and repeating, “I want my mother, I want my father.” His previous desires now seem meaningless. The child’s complete disinterest in material possessions once he is lost reveals the intense emotional bond he shares with his parents.
