The Bhabar is that narrow belt of the plain which is covered with pebbles and lies along the foothills of the Shiwaliks from the Indus to the Tista.

Give an account of the Northern Plains of India.
भारत के उत्तरी मैदान का वर्णन कीजिए।
Answer
The northern plain has been formed by the interplay of the three major river systems, namely the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra along with their tributaries. This plain is formed of alluvial soil which is suitable for agriculture. It spreads over an area of 7 lakh sq. km. The plain is a densely populated physiographic division. The Northern Plain is broadly divided into three sections, Punjab Plains, Ganga Plains and Brahpmputra plains. According to the variations in relief features, the Northern plains can be divided into four regions. Bhabar, a narrow belt of pebbles which lie at the foot of Shivaliks. Terai, lie next to Bhabar which a wet and marshy area with wildlife and forests. Bhangar is made up of older alluvium plain which rises above the level of the flood plains. Khadar is a younger alluvium of the flood plains.
उत्तरी मैदान तीन प्रमुख नदी प्रणालियों- सिन्धु, गंगा एवं ब्रह्मपुत्र तथा इसकी सहायक नदियों से बना है| यह मैदान जलोढ़ मृदा से बना है। लाखों वर्षों में हिमालय के गिरिपाद में स्थित बहुत बड़े बेसिन में जलोढ़ों का निक्षेप हुआ, जिससे इस उपजाऊ मैदान का निर्माण हुआ है। इसका विस्तार 7 लाख वर्ग कि.मी. के क्षेत्र पर है तथा लगभग 2,400 कि.मी. लंबा एवं 240 से 320 कि.मी. चौड़ा है। उत्तरी मैदान को मोटे तौर पर तीन उपवर्गों में विभाजित किया गया है:- पंजाब का मैदान, गंगा का मैदान और ब्रह्मपुत्र का मैदान। उत्तरी मैदान की भूमि समतल नहीं है। इन विस्तृत मैदानों की भौगोलिक आकृतियों में भी विविधता है। आकृतिक भिन्नता के आधार पर उत्तरी मैदानों को चार भागों में भी विभाजित किया जा सकता है – भाबर, तराई, भांगर तथा खादर।

Answer
(i) The Indian desert lies towards the western margins of the Aravali Hills. It is an undulating sandy plain covered with sand dunes called barchans. This region receives very low rainfall below 150 mm per year. It has arid climate with low vegetation cover. Streams appear during the rainy season. Soon after they disappear into the sand as they do not have enough water to reach the sea. Luni is the only large river in this region.
(i) मध्य हिमालय – हिमाद्रि के दक्षिण में स्थित यह श्रृंखला सबसे अधिक असम है। इन श्रृंखलाओं का निर्माण मुख्यतः अत्यधिक संपीडित तथा परिवर्तित शैलों से हुआ है। इनकी ऊँचाई 3,700 मीटर से 4,500 मीटर के बीच तथा औसत चौड़ाई 50 कि.मी. है। पीर पंजाल श्रृंखला, धौलाधर एवं महाभारत श्रृंखलाएँ सबसे लंबी तथा सबसे महत्वपूर्ण श्रृंखला है। इसी श्रृंखला में कश्मीर की घाटी तथा हिमाचल के कांगड़ा एवं कुल्लू की घाटियाँ स्थित है| इस क्षेत्र को पहाड़ी नगरों के लिए जाना जाता है।
(ii) The part of the peninsular plateau lying to the north of the Narmada River covering a major area of the Malwa plateau is known as the Central Highlands. The Vindhyan range is bounded by the Central Highlands on the south and the Aravali range on the northwest. The flow of the rivers draining this region, namely the Chambal, the Sind, the Betwa and Ken is from southwest to northeast, thus indicating the slope. The Central Highlands are wider in the west but narrower in the east. The eastward extensions of this plateau are locally known as the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand. The Chotanagpur plateau marks the further eastward extension, drained by the Damodar River.
(ii) मध्य उच्चभूमि- नर्मदा नदी के उत्तर में प्रायद्वीपीय पठार का वह भाग जो कि मालवा के पठार के अधिकतर भागों पर फैला है उसे मध्य उच्चभूमि के नाम से जाना जाता है। विंध्य श्रृंखला दक्षिण में मध्य उच्चभूमि तथा उत्तर-पश्चिम में अरावली से घिरी है। पश्चिम में यह धीरे-धीरे राजस्थान के बलुई तथा पथरीले मरूस्थल से मिल जाता है। इस क्षेत्र में बहने वाली नदियाँ हैं- चम्बल, सिंध, बेतवा तथा केन। मध्य उच्चभूमि पश्चिम में चौड़ी लेकिन पूर्व में संकीर्ण है| इस पठार के पूर्वी विस्तार को स्थानीय रूप से बुंदेलखंड तथा बघेलखंड के नाम से जाना जाता है। इसके और पूर्व के विस्तार को दामोदर नदी द्वारा अपवाहित छोटा नागपुर पठार दर्शाता है।
(iii) India has two main island groups, namely Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar island. The Lakshadweep consists of many small islands located opposite the Kerala coast in the Arabian Sea. The islands of this group are formed of coral deposits. It covers small area of 32 sq km. Kavaratti island is the administrative headquarters of Lakshadweep. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, on the other hand, are larger in size. They are more in number and more widely scattered. These islands are an elevated portion of submarine mountains.
(iii) भारत के द्वीप समूह- भारत में दो मुख्य द्वीप समूह हैं- लक्षद्वीप तथा अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप। केरल के मालाबार तट के पास द्वीपों का समूह लक्षद्वीप स्थित है। द्वीपों का यह समूह छोटे प्रवाल द्वीपों से बना है। पहले इनको लकादीव, मीनीकाय तथा एमीनदीव के नाम से जाना जाता था। यह 32 वर्ग कि.मी. के छोटे से क्षेत्र में फैला है। कावारत्ती द्वीप लक्षद्वीप का प्रशासनिक मुख्यालय है। अंडमान और निकोबार द्वीप बंगाल की खाड़ी में उत्तर से दक्षिण के तरफ फैले द्वीपों की श्रृंखला है। यह द्वीप समूह आकर में बड़े संख्या में बहुल तथा बिखरे हुए हैं। यह द्वीप समूह मुख्यतः दो भागों में बाँटा गया है- उत्तर में अंडमान तथा दक्षिण में निकोबार। यह द्वीप समूह निमज्जित पर्वत श्रेणियों के शिखर हैं।
