Question 1:
Explore how ‘The Tale of Melon City ‘ uses satire to criticise governance and public attitude towards leadership?
Answer
The Tale of Melon City is a sharp satire on absurd governance and the indifferent public attitude towards leadership. Through exaggerated events, the poet exposes a system where laws are followed blindly without logic or justice. The King orders the execution of the guilty, but responsibility is passed from one official to another until the noose is finally blamed. This highlights how officials in power avoid accountability and rely on technicalities instead of moral sense. The selection of a ruler is equally ridiculous: the people choose a melon as their king simply because it satisfies the “law” that the next ruler must be the one on whom the crown fits. This reflects the public’s passive acceptance of foolish decisions as long as their comfort is not disturbed. Thus, the poem mocks both inefficient governance and a society that values convenience over responsible leadership.
