Summary in English
The poem begins with a description about the king who ordered an arch to be built. When he rode down that arch, it hit his head and his crown fell down. It was because it was built too low. The king thought it was dishonorable and thus commanded the chief of builders to be hanged. The chief of builders put the blame on the workmen who in turn blamed the bricks. The king orders for the execution of the mason who put the blame on the architect. The architect is brought to the Royal Court and indirectly blames the king for the wrongly constructed arch. The placid king now grows angry and demand for the wisest man in the country to be brought to the Royal Court.
They brought the wisest man, who was so old that he could neither see nor walk. According to him, the arch must be hanged. When the arch is supposed to be executed, one of the ministers argue that it would be a shame to punish something that had touched their mighty king’s head. Everyone, along with the king, agreed. The crowd grew restless and the king promised them a hanging. Therefore, a noose was set-up and the one to fit it would be hanged. All were measured one by one but the only one to fit was the king. The ministers took a sigh of relief upon finding someone to execute.
Thus, as a result of the customary choice, the next to pass the City gate would choose the new King. The next to pass it was an idiot who wanted a melon to be their king. The melon was given the throne with due ceremony and the town lived happily ever after without any interruption or interference.

यह कविता एक राजा के वर्णन से शुरू होती है, जिसने एक मेहराब (तोरण द्वार) बनवाने का आदेश दिया। जब वह उस मेहराब के नीचे से गुज़रा, तो मेहराब उसके सिर से टकराई और उसका मुकुट गिर गया। ऐसा इसलिए हुआ क्योंकि मेहराब बहुत नीची बनाई गई थी। राजा को यह बहुत अपमानजनक लगा और उसने मुख्य निर्माणकर्ता को फाँसी देने का आदेश दिया। मुख्य निर्माणकर्ता ने दोष मजदूरों पर डाल दिया और मजदूरों ने ईंटों को दोषी ठहराया। राजा ने राजमिस्त्री को फाँसी देने का आदेश दिया, जिसने फिर सारा दोष वास्तुकार पर डाल दिया। वास्तुकार को राजदरबार में लाया गया और उसने परोक्ष रूप से राजा को ही दोषी ठहरा दिया कि उसके आदेश पर यह मेहराब गलत बनी थी।
अब तक शांत रहने वाला राजा क्रोधित हो गया और देश के सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को दरबार में लाने का आदेश दिया।
सबसे बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति को लाया गया जो इतना बूढ़ा था कि न देख सकता था और न चल सकता था। उसने कहा कि मेहराब को ही फाँसी दी जानी चाहिए। जब मेहराब को फाँसी दी जाने लगी, तो एक मंत्री ने तर्क दिया कि उस मेहराब को दंड देना शर्मनाक होगा क्योंकि उसने हमारे महान राजा के सिर को छुआ था। सभी, यहाँ तक कि राजा ने भी, इस बात से सहमति जताई। भीड़ बेचैन हो गई और राजा ने उन्हें फाँसी का वादा किया था। इसलिए एक फाँसी का फंदा लगाया गया और तय हुआ कि जो उसके लायक होगा, उसे फाँसी दी जाएगी। एक-एक करके सभी की नाप ली गई और केवल राजा ही उस फंदे में फिट बैठा। मंत्रियों को तब राहत मिली कि अंततः किसी को फाँसी दी जाएगी।
इस प्रकार, परंपरा के अनुसार, निर्णय लिया गया कि अब जो भी सबसे पहले नगर द्वार से गुज़रेगा, वही नया राजा चुना जाएगा। सबसे पहले वहाँ से एक मूर्ख गुज़रा और उसने कहा कि वह चाहता है कि उसका राजा एक खरबूजा हो। खरबूजे को विधिवत् राज्याभिषेक के साथ गद्दी पर बैठाया गया और नगरवासी बिना किसी हस्तक्षेप के खुशी-खुशी जीवन बिताने लगे।
