“Proteins control the expression of various characters.” Explain this statement by taking an example of ‘tallness’ as a characteristic in plants.

Answer
Proteins control the expression of characters because genes produce specific proteins.
In plants, the gene responsible for tallness produces a protein (growth hormone) that promotes cell division and elongation of the stem, resulting in a tall plant.
If this protein is not produced or is produced in insufficient amount, the plant remains dwarf.
Thus, the presence or absence of a particular protein determines whether the plant will be tall or short.
प्रोटीन विभिन्न लक्षणों की अभिव्यक्ति को नियंत्रित करते हैं क्योंकि जीन विशेष प्रकार के प्रोटीन बनाते हैं।
पौधों में लम्बेपन का जीन ऐसे प्रोटीन (वृद्धि हार्मोन) का निर्माण करता है जो तने की कोशिकाओं की वृद्धि और लंबाई बढ़ाता है, जिससे पौधा लंबा हो जाता है।
यदि यह प्रोटीन नहीं बनता या कम मात्रा में बनता है तो पौधा बौना रह जाता है।
इस प्रकार यह स्पष्ट होता है कि किसी लक्षण की अभिव्यक्ति प्रोटीन पर निर्भर करती है।
