Describe the problems faced by the Weimar Republic.

Answer
The Weimar Republic faced the following problems:
(1) The Treaty of Versailles after the First World War was unfair to Germany. Germany was exploited using that treaty and due to the humiliating terms of the Treaty, the common public was discontent.
(2) Due to Germany being made to pay for the First World War, its economy crumbled. The price of essential goods increased substantially and the gold reserves were depleted.
(3) In an economic crisis, the German government elected democratically could not cope with the problems and failed to solve them Thus, the public later accepted the dictatorship of Hitler.
वाइमर गणराज्य को निम्नलिखित समस्याओं का सामना करना पड़ा:
(1) प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के बाद हुई वर्साय की संधि जर्मनी के प्रति अन्यायपूर्ण थी। इस संधि का इस्तेमाल जर्मनी का शोषण करने के लिए किया गया और संधि की अपमानजनक शर्तों के कारण आम जनता में असंतोष व्याप्त था।
(2) प्रथम विश्व युद्ध की कीमत चुकाने के कारण जर्मनी की अर्थव्यवस्था चरमरा गई। ज़रूरी वस्तुओं की कीमतें काफ़ी बढ़ गईं और सोने का भंडार ख़त्म हो गया।
(3) आर्थिक संकट के समय लोकतांत्रिक तरीके से चुनी गई जर्मन सरकार समस्याओं का सामना नहीं कर सकी और उन्हें सुलझाने में असफल रही। इस प्रकार, बाद में जनता ने हिटलर की तानाशाही को स्वीकार कर लिया।

Discuss why Nazism became popular in Germany by 1930.
इस बारे में चर्चा कीजिए कि 1930 तक आते-आते जर्मनी में नात्सीवाद को लोकप्रियता क्यों मिलने लगी?
Answer
The following reasons made Nazism popular in Germany in the 1930s:
(1) The democratic governments could not solve the country’s economic crisis and left abruptly. Thus, people were fed up with weak governments.
(2) Adolf Hitler promised the people to uphold the conditions and dignity of Germany. This instilled hope in the minds of the people.
(3) The Nazi party did not let other parties gain ground and hence, people listened only to the Nazis.
1930 के दशक में जर्मनी में नाज़ीवाद को लोकप्रिय बनाने वाले निम्नलिखित कारण थे:
(1) लोकतांत्रिक सरकारें देश के आर्थिक संकट का समाधान नहीं कर सकीं और अचानक सत्ता छोड़ गईं। इस प्रकार, लोग कमज़ोर सरकारों से तंग आ चुके थे।
(2) एडॉल्फ हिटलर ने लोगों से जर्मनी की स्थिति और गरिमा को बनाए रखने का वादा किया। इससे लोगों के मन में आशा का संचार हुआ।
(3) नाजी पार्टी ने अन्य पार्टियों को आगे बढ़ने नहीं दिया और इसलिए लोग केवल नाजियों की ही बात सुनते थे।

What are the peculiar features of Nazi thinking?
नात्सी सोच के खास पहलू कौन-से थे?
Answer
The peculiar features of Nazi thinking were
(1) A belief in racial heirarchy and Lebensraum or living space.
(2) Nordic German Aryans were at the top, while the jews formed the lowest rung of the racial ladder.
(3) They believed that only the strongest race would survive and rule.
नात्सी विचारधारा की अनूठी विशेषतायें निम्नलिखित थीं-
(1) लोगों के बीच कोई समानता नहीं, बल्कि केवल एक प्रजातीय वंशानक्रम है।
(2) नीली आँखों वाले नॉर्डिक जर्मन आर्य वंशानुक्रम में सबसे श्रेष्ठ तथा यहूदी लोग सबसे हीन हैं।
(3) नात्सियों का मानना था कि श्रेष्ठ प्रजाति रहेगी तथा हीन प्रजाति को नष्ट हो पड़ेगा।

Explain why Nazi propaganda was effective in creating a hatred for Jews.
नात्सियों का प्रोपेगैंडा यहूदियों के खिलाफ़ नफ़रत पैदा करने में इतना असरदार कैसे रहा?
Answer
Nazi propaganda was effective in creating hatred for the jews:
(1) The Nazis used the language and media effectively with great care. The racial theory put forward by the Nazis that the Jews belonged to a lower race and as such were undesirable.
(2) The traditional Christian hatred for the Jews, because they were accused to have killed Christ, was fully exploited by the Nazis in order to make the Germans pre-judicial against Jews.
(3) The Nazis injected hatred against the Jews even in the minds of the children from the very beginning during the days of their schooling. The teachers who were Jews were dismissed and Jews children were thrown out of the schools. Such methods and new ideological training to the new generation of children went a long way in making the Nazi’s propaganda quite effective in creating hatred for the Jews.
नात्सियों का प्रोपेगैंडा के लिए घृणा पैदा करने में निम्नलिखित कारण कारगर थे –
(1) नात्सियों ने बड़ी सावधानी से भाषा और मीडिया का प्रभावी ढंग से उपयोग किया। नात्सियों द्वारा नस्लीय सिद्धांत को सामने रखा गया कि यहूदी निचली नस्ल के थे और इसलिए अवांछनीय थे।
(2) नात्सियों ने मध्यकाल में यहूदियों की निम्न स्थिति का सफलतापूर्वक शोषण किया क्योंकि परंपरागत रूप में ईसाई, यहूदियों से घृणा करते थे। यहूदियों को यीशु का हत्यारा माना जाता था। उन्हें सांस्कारिक हत्यारा माना जाता था तथा जमीन खरीदने से प्रतिबंधित कर दिया गया था। उन्हें शोषक महाजन के रूप में देखा जाता था।
(3) नात्सियों ने स्कूली दिनों के दौरान शुरू से ही बच्चों के मन में यहूदियों के खिलाफ नफरत करना सिखाया। जो शिक्षक यहूदी थे उन्हें बर्खास्त कर दिया गया और यहूदी बच्चों को स्कूलों से बाहर निकाल दिया गया। नई पीढ़ी के बच्चों को इस तरह के नए वैचारिक प्रशिक्षण दिए गए ताकि वे यहूदियों के लिए अपने दिल में नफरत रखें|

Explain what role women had in Nazi society. Return to Chapter 1 on the French Revolution. Write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the role of women in the two periods.

Role of women in Nazi society followed the rules of a largely patriarchal or male-dominated society. Hitler hailed women as “the most important citizen” in his Germany, but this was true for only Aryan women who bred pure-blood, “desirable” Aryans. Motherhood was the only goal they were taught to reach for, apart from performing the stereotypical functions of managing the household and being good wives. This was in stark contrast to the role of women in the French Revolution where women led movements and fought for rights to education and equal wages. They were allowed to form political clubs, and schooling was made compulsory for them after the French Revolution.
नात्सी समाज में महिलाओं ने द्वितीयक स्तर की भूमिका अदा की। उन्हें आर्य संस्कृति का संवाहक माना जाता था। इस संहिता का उल्लंघन करने वाली महिलाओं को दंडित तथा अपमानित कर जेलों में कैद कर दिया जाता था। दूसरी तरफ, जो महिलाएँ इन आचार संहिताओं का पालन करती थीं उन्हें सम्मानित किया । था। गैर-जर्मन महिलाओं के आत्मसम्मान को ठेस पहुँचाई जाती थी। इसके उलट फ्रांसीसी क्रांति ने महिलाओं के जीवन में नई गतिविधियों का संचार किया। महिलाओं का का में बराबर का साझीदार माना जाता था। वे कई प्रगतिशील गतिविधियों जैसे राजनीतिक क्लबों की सदस्यता, पा अखबार, नौकरी आदि में भाग ले सकती थीं। महिलाओं ने अपनी एक संस्था ‘क्रांतिकारी एवं गणतांत्रिक मार समाज’ की स्थापना की। उन्होंने अपने लिए समान राजनीतिक अधिकारों की माँग की जिसे अंतत: 300 वषा लंबे संघर्ष के बाद प्राप्त किया। 1946 में फ्रांसीसी महिलाओं को मत देने का अधिकार प्रदान कर दिया गया।

In what ways did the Nazi state seek to establish total control over its people ?
नात्सियों ने जनता पर पूरा नियंत्रण हासिल करने के लिए कौन-कौन से तरीके अपनाए?
Answer
The Nazis established control over its people by various means:
(1) They used different propaganda through posters or films to glorify their behaviour.
(2) Media was carefully used to win support for the regime and popularise it.
(3) Nazism worked on the minds of the people, tapped their emotions and turned their hatred and anger against those marked as ‘undesirable’.
(4) Special surveillance and security forces to control and order society in ways that the Nazis wanted, was created.
नात्सी सरकार ने जनता पर संपूर्ण नियंत्रण स्थापित करने के लिए निम्नलिखित कदम उठाए –
(1) युवाओं का विचार परिवर्तन – उनकी बाल्यावस्था से ही नात्सी सरकार ने बच्चों के मन-मस्तिष्क पर कब्जा लिया जैसे-जैसे वे बड़े होते गये उन्हें वैचारिक प्रशिक्षण द्वारा नात्सीवाद की ओर बढ़ने के लिए प्रेरित किया गया।
(2) स्कली बच्चों का विचार परिवर्तन-नात्सी सरकार ने अपनी विचारधारा पर आधारित नए पाठ्यक्रम के अरूप पस्तकें तैयार करवाई। कई युवा चित्रकारिता कार्यक्रम बनाये गये। इन सबके द्वारा उन्हें नम्रता तथा कृतज्ञता पाठ पढाया गया। उनसे कहा जाता था कि वे यहूदियों से घृणा तथा हिटलर की पूजा करें।
(3) खेल गतिविधियाँ-उन सभी खेल गतिविधियों (खासकर बॉक्सिंग) को प्रोत्साहित किया गया जो बच्चों में हिंसा तथा आक्रामकता की भावना पैदा करती थीं।
(4) लड़कियों का विचार परिवर्तन-लड़कियों को शिक्षा दी जाती थी कि उन्हें अच्छी माँ बनना था तथा शुद्ध रक्त वाले आर्य बच्चों का लालन-पालन करना था।
