a) Why growth of nationalism in the colonies is linked to an anti-colonial movement.

Answer
The sense of being oppressed under colonialism provided a shared bond that tied many different groups together. People began discovering their unity in the process of their struggle with colonialism. The movements of freedom struggle were joined by the masses to free themselves from foreign exploitation. Thus, the growth of nationalism in the colonies is linked to anti-colonial movements.
उत्पीड़न और दमन के साझा भाव ने विभिन् समूहों को एक-दूसरे से बाँध दिया था। औपनिवेशिक शासकों के खिलाफ संघर्ष के दौरान लोग आपसी एकता को पहचानने लगे थे। खुद को विदेशी शोषण से मुक्त करने के लिए स्वतंत्रता संग्राम की गतिविधियों में जनता बड़े स्तर पर शामिल हुई। इस प्रकार, उपनिवेशों में राष्ट्रवाद के उदय की प्रक्रिया उपनिवेशवाद विरोधी आंदोलन से जुड़ी हुई थी।
b) How the First World War helped in the growth of the National Movement in India.

Answer
During the First World War, to finance the defence expenditure, customs duties were raised and income tax introduced. The forced recruitment in rural areas caused widespread anger. In 1918-19 and 1920-21, crops failed in many parts of India which resulted in acute shortages of food. Also, there was an influenza epidemic. The hardships of people did not ended after the war. Thus, they united under leaders to find a new way of struggle.
प्रथम विश्व युद्ध के दौरान, रक्षा व्यय में भारी इजाफ़ा हुआ जिसकी भरपाई करने के लिए युद्ध के नाम पर सीमा शुल्क बढ़ा दिया गया और आयकर शुरू किया गया| गाँवों में सिपाहियों को जबरन भर्ती किया गया जिसके कारण ग्रामीण इलाकों में व्यापक गुस्सा था। 1918-19 और 1920-21 में देश के बहुत सारे हिस्सों में फसल खराब हो गई जिसके कारण खाद्य पदार्थों का भारी अभाव पैदा हो गया। उसी समय फ़्लू की महामारी फैल गई। युद्ध के बाद लोगों की कठिनाइयों का अंत नहीं हुआ। इस प्रकार, पहले विश्व युद्ध ने भारत में राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के विकास में योगदान दिया।
c) Why Indians were outraged by the Rowlatt Act.

Answer
The Rowlatt Act was hurriedly passed through the Imperial Legislative Council despite the united opposition of the Indian members. It gave the government enormous powers to repress political activities and allowed detention of political prisoners without trial for two years. This was an unjust and oppressive law for Indians. Thus, Indians were outraged by the Rowlatt Act.
भारतीय सदस्यों के भारी विरोध के बावजूद इस कानून को इम्पीरियल लेजिस्लेटिव काउंसिल ने बहुत जल्दबाजी में पारित कर दिया था। इस कानून के ज़रिए सरकार को राजनीतिक गतिविधियों को कुचलने और राजनीतिक कैदियों को दो साल तक बिना मुकदमा चलाए जेल में बंद रखने का अधिकार मिल गया था। यह भारतीयों के लिए एक अन्यायपूर्ण और दमनकारी कानून था। इसलिए, भारत के लोग रॉलट एक्ट के विरोध में थे|
d) Why Gandhiji decided to withdraw the Non-Cooperation Movement.
(घ) गांधीजी ने असहयोग आंदोलन को वापस लेने का फैसला क्यों लिया।
Answer
Gandhiji felt the movement was turning violent in many places such as Chauri Chaura incident. He felt that satyagrahis needed to be properly trained before they would be ready for mass struggles. Thus, Gandhiji decided to withdraw the Non-Cooperation Movement.
गांधीजी ने महसूस किया कि चौरी-चौरा घटना जैसे कई स्थानों पर आंदोलन हिंसक होता जा रहा है| उन्होंने महसूस किया कि सामूहिक संघर्षों के लिए तैयार होने से पहले सत्याग्रहियों को व्यापक प्रशिक्षण की जरूरत है। इसलिए, गांधीजी ने असहयोग आंदोलन को वापस लेने का फैसला किया।

What is meant by the idea of satyagraha?
सत्याग्रह के विचार का क्या मतलब है?
Answer
Satyagraha was a novel method of mass agitation. The idea of ‘Satyagraha’ emphasized the power of truth and the need to search for truth. It suggested that if the cause was true, if the struggle was against injustice, then physical force was not necessary to fight the oppressor. A satyagrahi could win the battle through non-violence without seeking vengeance or being aggressive.
सत्याग्रह के विचार में सत्य की शक्ति पर आग्रह और सत्य की खोज पर जोर दिया जाता था। इसका अर्थ यह था कि अगर आपका उद्देश्य सच्चा है, यदि आपका संघर्ष अन्याय के ख़िलाफ़ है तो उत्पीड़क से मुकाबला करने के लिए आपको किसी शारीरिक बल की आवश्यकता नहीं है। प्रतिशोध की भावना या आक्रामकता का सहारा लिए बिना सत्याग्रही केवल अहिंसा के सहारे भी अपने संघर्ष में सफल हो सकता है।

Answer
(a) On 13th April 1919, the infamous Jallianwalla Bagh incident took place in the enclosed ground of Jallianwala Bagh. A large crowd gathered in the Jallianwala Bagh. Some people were present to protest against the British government’s repressive measures while others were there to attend the annual Baishakhi Fair. Being from outside the city, many villagers were unaware of the martial
law that had been imposed. Suddenly, a British military officer, General Dyer came, blocked the exit points from the Bagh and opened fire upon the innocent citizens. Hundreds of innocent people including women and children were killed and wounded due to firing by the British soldiers.
(क) 13 अप्रैल को जलियाँवाला बाग हत्याकांड हुआ। उस दिन अमृतसर में बहुत सारे गाँव वाले सालाना वैसाखी मेले में शिरकत करने के लिए जलियाँवाला बाग मैदान में जमा हुए थे। काफी लोग तो सरकार द्वारा लागू किए गए दमनकारी कानून का विरोध प्रकट करने के लिए एकत्रित हुए। यह मैदान चारों तरफ से बंद था। शहर से बाहर होने के कारण वहाँ जुटे लोगों को यह पता नहीं था कि इलाके में मार्शल लॉ लागू किया जा चुका है। जनरल डायर हथियारबंद सैनिकों के साथ वहाँ पहुँचा और जाते ही उसने मैदान से बाहर निकलने के सारे रास्तों को बंद कर दिया। इसके बाद उसके सिपाहियों ने भीड़ पर अंधाधुंध गोलियाँ चला दीं। सैंकड़ों लोग मारे गए। बाद में उसने बताया कि वह सत्याग्रहियों के जहन में दहशत और विस्मय का भाव पैदा करके ‘एक नैतिक प्रभाव उत्पन्न करना चाहता था।
(b) The Simon Commission was constituted by the Tory Government in Britain, under Sir John Simon. The objective of the Commission was to look into the functioning of the constitutional system in India and suggest some constitutional changes. But nationalists in India opposed the Commission because it had not a single Indian member. Therefore, when the Simon Commission arrived in India in 1928, it was greeted with the slogan “Go Back Simon”. All parties, including Congress and the Muslim league, participated in the demonstrations.
(ख) सर जॉन साइमन के नेतृत्व में, ब्रिटेन में टोरी सरकार द्वारा साइमन कमीशन का गठन किया गया था। राष्ट्रवादी आंदोलन के जवाब में गठित किए गए इस आयोग को भारत में संवैधानिक व्यवस्था की कार्यशैली का अध्ययन करना था और उसके बारे में सुझाव देने थे। इस आयोग में एक भी भारतीय सदस्य नहीं था सारे अंग्रेज़ थे। लेकिन भारत में राष्ट्रवादियों ने आयोग का विरोध किया क्योंकि इसमें एक भी भारतीय सदस्य नहीं था। इसलिए, 1928 में जब साइमन कमीशन भारत पहुँचा तो उसका स्वागत ‘साइमन कमीशन वापस जाओ’ (साइमन कमीशन गो बैक) के नारों से किया गया। कांग्रेस और मुस्लिम लीग, सभी पार्टियों ने प्रदर्शनों में हिस्सा लिया।

Compare the images of Bharat Mata in this chapter with the image of Germania in Chapter 1.

(1) The image of Germania was the symbol of German nation whereas the image of Bharat Mata was the symbol of Indian nation.
(2) Both images inspired nationalists who worked very hard to unify their respective countries and to attain a liberal nation.
(3) The image of Bharat Mata painted by Abanindranath Tagore is bestowed with learning, food, clothing and some ascetic quality also. Another painting of Bharat Mata in which we find Mata holding Trishul and standing beside a lion and an elephant – symbols of power and authority. Germania as a female figure is standing against a background of the tricolour fabric of the national flag. She is wearing a crown of oak leaves, as the German oak stands for heroism.
(1) जर्मनिया की छवि जर्मन राष्ट्र का प्रतीक थी जबकि भारत माता की छवि भारतीय राष्ट्र का प्रतीक थी।

List all the different social groups which joined the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1921. Then choose any three and write about their hopes and struggles to show why they joined the movement.

Answer
The different social groups that joined the Non-Cooperation Movement of 1921 were the urban middle class comprising lawyers, students, teachers and headmasters, peasants, tribals and workers.
(1) The middle class joined the movement because the boycott of foreign goods would make the sale of their textiles and handlooms go up.
(2) The peasants took part in the movement because they hoped they would be saved from the oppressive landlords, high taxes taken by the colonial government.
(3) Plantation workers took part in the agitation hoping they would get the right to move freely in and outside the plantations and get land in their own villages.

Discuss the Salt March to make clear why it was an effective symbol of resistance against colonialism.

Answer
Mahatma Gandhi found in salt a powerful symbol that could unite the nation as it was consumed by rich and poor alike. He declared that the tax on salt and the government monopoly over its production was the most oppressive face of British rule. Gandhiji sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin stating eleven demands. The most stirring of all was the demand to abolish the salt tax. Irwin was unwilling to negotiate, so Gandhiji started Salt march with 78 volunteers. He reached Dandi, violated law and made salt. This March developed the feeling of nationalism, people in different parts of the country broke the salt law and manufactured salt and demonstrated in front of government salt factories. Thus, Salt March was an effective symbol of resistance against colonialism.
देश को एकजुट करने के लिए महात्मा गांधी को नमक एक शक्तिशाली प्रतीक दिखाई दिया चूँकि नमक का अमीर-गरीब, सभी इस्तेमाल करते थे। यह भोजन का एक अभिन्न हिस्सा था। इसीलिए नमक पर कर और उसके उत्पादन पर सरकारी इजारेदारी को महात्मा गांधी ने ब्रिटिश शासन का सबसे दमनकारी पहलू बताया था।उन्होंने वायसराय इरविन को एक खत लिखा जिसमें उन्होंने 11 माँगों का उल्लेख किया था। इनमें सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण माँग नमक कर को खत्म करने के बारे में थी। इरविन झुकने को तैयार नहीं थे। फलस्वरूप, महात्मा गांधी ने अपने 78 विश्वस्त वॉलंटियरों के साथ नमक यात्रा शुरू कर दी। वह दांडी पहुंचे, कानून का उल्लंघन किया और नमक बनाया। इस मार्च ने लोगों में राष्ट्रवाद की भावना विकसित की, देश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में लोगों ने नमक कानून तोड़ा और नमक का निर्माण किया और सरकारी नमक कारखानों के सामने प्रदर्शित किया। इस प्रकार, नमक मार्च उपनिवेशवाद के खिलाफ प्रतिरोध का एक प्रभावी प्रतीक था।

Imagine you are a woman participating in the Civil Disobedience Movement. Explain what the experience meant to your life.

I participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement which was called by Gandhiji. I participated in protest marches, manufactured salt, and picketed foreign cloth and liquor shops and went to jail. I really see these services to the nation as a sacred duty of women. From the very start, I was sure that British had to leave our country and I saw this as a proud moment as I took part in this activity.
मैंने गांधीजी के बुलावे पर सिविल अवज्ञा आंदोलन में भाग लिया। मैंने जुलूसों में हिस्सा लिया, नमक बनाया, और विदेशी कपड़ों और शराब की दुकानों की पिकेटिंग की और जेल गई। मैं वास्तव राष्ट्र की सेवा करना अपना पवित्र दायित्व मानती हूँ| बहुत शुरुआत से, मुझे यकीन था कि अंग्रेजों को हमारा देश छोड़ना होगा इसलिए इन गतिविधियों में भाग लेने को मैं गर्व के क्षण के रूप में देखती हूँ|

Why did political leaders differ sharply over the question of separate electorates?

Answer
Many dalit leaders were keen on a different political solution to the problems of the community. They began organising themselves, demanding a separate electorate that would choose dalit members for legislative councils. They believed political empowerment would resolve the problems of their social disabilities. Dr B.R. Ambedkar, who organised the dalits into the Depressed Classes Association in 1930, clashed with Mahatma Gandhi at the second Round Table Conference by demanding separate electorates for dalits. Gandhiji believed that separate electorates for dalits would slow down the process of their integration into society.
बहुत सारे दलित नेता अपने समुदाय की समस्याओं का अलग राजनीतिक हल ढूँढ़ना चाहते थे। वे खुद को संगठित करने लगे। उन्होंने अलग निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों की बात कही ताकि वहाँ से विधायी परिषदों के लिए केवल दलितों को ही चुनकर भेजा जा सके। उनका मानना था कि उनकी सामाजिक अपंगता केवल राजनीतिक सशक्तीकरण से ही दूर हो सकती है। डॉ. अंबेडकर ने 1930 में दलितों को दमित वर्ग एसोसिएशन (Depressed Classes Association) में संगठित किया। दलितों के लिए अलग निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों के सवाल पर दूसरे गोलमेज सम्मेलन में महात्मा गांधी के साथ उनका काफ़ी विवाद हुआ। जब ब्रिटिश सरकार ने अंबेडकर की माँग मान ली तो गांधीजी आमरण अनशन पर बैठ गए। उनका मत था कि दलितों के लिए अलग निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों की व्यवस्था से समाज में उनके एकीकरण की प्रक्रिया धीमी पड़ जाएगी। आखिरकार अंबेडकर ने गांधीजी की राय मान ली|
असहयोग-खिलाफत के शांत पर जाने के बाद कई मुस्लिम नेताओं और बुद्धिजीवियों ने भारत के भीतर अल्पसंख्यक के रूप में मुसलमानों की स्थिति के बारे में अपनी चिंता व्यक्त की। उन्हें डर था कि अल्पसंख्यकों की संस्कृति और पहचान हिंदू बहुमत के प्रभुत्व के अंदर दब जाएगी।
