Answer
(a) Giuseppe Mazzini was an Italian revolutionary. He was born in Genoa in 1807. He was a member of the secret society of the Carbonari. At the age of 24, he was sent into exile in 1831 for attempting a revolution in Liguria. He founded underground societies named ‘Young Italy’ in Marseilles and ‘Young Europe’ in Berne, whose members were like-minded young men from Poland, France, Italy and the German States. He believed that God had intended nations to be the natural units of mankind. So, Italy had to be forged into a single unified republic within a wider alliance of nations.

(b) Count Camilo de Cavour: Cavour was chief minister of Sardinia-Piedmont state who led the movement to unify the regions of Italy. He was neither a revolutionary nor a democrat. Like many other wealthy and educated members of the Italian elite, he spoke French much better than he did Italian. He engineered a careful diplomatic alliance with France, which helped Sardinia-Piedmont defeat the Austrian forces in 1859, and thereby free the northern part of Italy from the Austrian Habsburgs.
(ख) काउंट कैमिलो दे कावूर सार्डिनीया-पीडमॉन्ट का मंत्री प्रमुख था जिसने इटली के प्रदेशों को एकीकृत करने वाले आंदोलन का नेतृत्व किया। वह ना तो एक क्रन्तिकारी था और ना ही जनतंत्र में विश्वास करने वाला। इतालवी अभिजात वर्ग के तमाम अमीर और शिक्षित सदस्यों की तरह वह इतालवी भाषा से कहीं बेहतर फ़्रेंच बोलता था। फ़्रांस से सार्डिनीया-पिडमॉन्ट की एक चतुर कूटनीतिक संधि, जिसके पीछे कावूर का हाथ था, से सार्डिनीया-पिडमॉन्ट 1859 में ऑस्ट्रियाई बलों को हरा पाने में कामयाब हुआ, इससे इटली का उत्तरी भाग जो ऑस्ट्रियाई हैब्सवर्गों के अधीन था मुक्त हुआ।
(c) Greece was a part of the Ottoman Empire since the 15th century. The struggle for independence amongst the Greeks began in 1821. Nationalists in Greece got support from other Greeks living in exile and also from many Western Europeans sharing sympathies for ancient Greek culture. Poets and artists lauded Greece as the cradle of European civilisation and mobilised public opinion to support its struggle against a Muslim empire. Finally, the Treaty of Constantinople of 1832 recognised Greece as an independent nation.
(ग) 1821 में यूरोप में क्रन्तिकारी राष्ट्रवाद की प्रगति से यूनानियों का आजादी के लिए संघर्ष आरंभ हो गया। प्राचीन यूनानी संस्कृति के प्रति सहानुभूति रखने वाले पश्चिमी यूरोप के लोगों का समर्थन पाकर यूनानी राष्ट्रवादियों ने मुस्लिम साम्राज्य के विरुद्ध यूनान के संघर्ष के लिए जनमत जुटाया। अंततः 1832 की कुस्तुन्तुनिया की संधि ने यूनान को एक स्वतंत्र राष्ट्र की मान्यता दी।
(d) It was an all-German National Assembly formed by a large number of political associations whose members were middle-class professionals, businessmen and prosperous artisans. Its first meeting was convened on 18 May 1848 in the Church of St. Paul at Frankfurt. They drafted a constitution for the German nation to be headed by a monarchy subject to a parliament. The king of Prussia rejected the crown offered by the deputies of parliament and joined other monarchs to oppose the elected assembly. As it was dominated by the middle classes who resisted the demands of workers and artisans and consequently lost their support. In the end, troops were called in and the assembly was forced to disband.
(घ) 1848 में जर्मन इलाकों में बड़ी संख्या में राजनीतिक संगठनों ने फ्रैंकफर्ट शहर में मिलकर एक सर्व-जर्मन नेशनल असेंबली के पक्ष में मतदान करने का फैसला किया। 18 मई 1848 को 831 निवार्चित प्रतिनिधियों ने फ्रैंकफर्ट संसद में अपना स्थान ग्रहण किया। यह संसद सेंट पॉल चर्च में आयोजित हुई। इसमें जर्मन राष्ट्र के लिए एक संविधान का प्रारूप तैयार किया गया। इस राष्ट्र की अध्यक्षता एक ऐसे राजा को सौंपी गई जिसे संसद के अधीन रहना था। जब प्रतिनिधियों ने प्रशा के राजा को ताज पहनाने की पेशकश की तो उसने उसे अस्वीकार कर उन राजाओं का साथ दिया जो निर्वाचित सभा के विरोधी थे। जहाँ कुलीन वर्ग और सेना का विरोध बढ़ गया, वहीं संसद का सामाजिक आधार कमजोर हो गया। संसद में मध्य वर्गों का प्रभाव अधिक था जिन्होंने मजदूरों और कारीगरों के माँग का विरोध किया जिससे वे उनका समर्थन खो बैठे। अंत में सैनिकों को बुलाकर एसेम्बली को भंग कर दिया गया।
(e) The issue of extending political rights to women was a controversial one within the liberal movement, in which large numbers of women had participated actively over the years. Women had formed their own political associations, founded newspapers and taken part in political meetings and demonstrations. Despite this, they were denied suffrage during the election of the Assembly. When the Frankfurt Parliament convened in the Church of St. Paul, women were admitted only as observers to stand in the visitors’ gallery.

The French revolutionaries took many important steps to create a sense of collective identity among the French people which were:
(1) Ideas of la Patrie (the fatherland) and le Citoyen (the citizen) emphasising the notion of a united community enjoying equal rights under a constitution.
(2) A new French flag, a tricolour replaced the royal standard.
(3) The Estates General was renamed the National Assembly and was elected by a group of active citizens.
(4) New hymns, oaths and martyrs commemorated in the name of the nation.
(5) A central administrative system made uniform laws for the entire nation.
(6) Discouraging regional dialects and promoting French as a common language of the nation.

Answer
Marianne and Germania were female allegories for the French and the German nation respectively. These female allegories were used to portray ideas such as Liberty, Justice and the Republic. These allegories remind the public of the national symbol of unity and to persuade them to identify with it.

Answer
In 1848, the middle class Germans tried to unite the different regions of the German confederation into a nation-state governed by an elected parliament. But they were repressed by the combined forces of the monarchy and the military, supported by the large landowners of Prussia. After this, Prussia soon became the leader of German unification movement. Its Chief Minister Otto von Bismarck was the architect of the process with support from Prussian army and Prussian bureaucracy. The unification process was completed after Prussia won wars with Austria, Denmark and France over seven years time. In January 1871, the Prussian king, William I, was proclaimed the German Emperor in a ceremony held at Versailles.
राष्ट्रवादी भावनाएँ मध्यवर्गीय जर्मन लोगों में काफ़ी व्याप्त थीं और उन्होंने 1848 में उदारवादियों ने जर्मन महासंघ के विभिन्न इलाकों को जोड़ कर एक निर्वाचित संसद द्वारा शासित राष्ट्र-राज्य बनाने का प्रयास किया था। मगर राजशाही और फौजी ताकतों द्वारा राष्ट्र निर्माण की यह पहल प्रशा के मदद से दबा दी गई। बाद में प्रशा ने राष्ट्रीय एकीकरण के आन्दोलन का नेतृत्व सँभाल लिया। प्रशा का प्रमुख मंत्री ऑटो वॉन बिस्मार्क ने प्रशा की सेना और नौकरशाही की मदद से साथ वर्ष के दौरान ऑस्ट्रिया, डेनमार्क, और फ्रांस से तीन युद्धों में विजय प्राप्त की तथा जर्मनी के एकीकरण की प्रक्रिया पूरी की। जनवरी 1871 में, वर्साय में हुए एक सामरोह में प्रशा के राजा विलियम प्रथम को जर्मनी का सम्राट घोषित किया गया।

Napoleon introduced following changes to make the administrative system more efficient in the areas ruled by him:
(1) He established civil code in 1804 also known as the Napoleonic Code which did away with all privileges based on birth and established equality before law and secured the right to property.
(2) He simplified administrative divisions, abolished feudal system, and freed peasants from serfdom and manorial dues.
(3), In towns too, guild systems were removed. Transport and communication systems were improved.
अपने शासन वाले क्षेत्रों में शासन व्यवस्था को ज्यादा कुशल बनाने के लिए नेपोलियन ने निम्नलिखित बदलाव किए –

Contribution of Culture to the Growth of Nationalism in Europe:
(a) Folk Songs and Folk Tales – These revived shared traditions and history, creating a common national identity. For example, the Grimm Brothers collected German folk tales to promote German nationalism.
(b) Language – Common language united people. After Poland lost its independence, Polish language was used in churches and schools to resist Russian domination.
(c) Art and Poetry – Romantic poets and artists glorified the past and inspired national pride through paintings, poems, and patriotic literature.
यूरोप में राष्ट्रवाद के विकास में संस्कृति का योगदान:

In the 19th century, Germany and Italy were unified into nation-states through wars and political efforts. In Germany, Otto von Bismarck led the unification through wars against Denmark, Austria, and France, forming the German Empire in 1871 under Kaiser William I. In Italy, Count Cavour, Giuseppe Garibaldi, and Mazzini played key roles. Cavour unified the north, Garibaldi the south, and Italy was declared united in 1861 under King Victor Emmanuel II. Both unifications were monarch-led and conservative.

The history of nationalism in Britain unlike the rest of Europe because:
(1) In Britain, the formation of the nation-state was not the result of a sudden upheaval or revolution.
(2) The primary identities of the people who inhabited the British Isles were ethnic ones – such as English, Welsh, Scot or Irish.
(3) The Act of Union (1707) between England and Scotland resulted in the formation of the ‘United Kingdom of Great Britian’ meant that England was able to impose its influence on Scotland. Scotland’s distinctive culture and political institutions were systematically suppressed.
ब्रिटेन में राष्ट्रवाद का इतिहास शेष यूरोप की तुलना में इस प्रकार भिन्न था। अठारहवीं सदी से पहले ब्रितानी राष्ट्र था ही नहीं। ब्रिटिश द्वीप मुख्य रूप से चार भागों में बंटा था- अंग्रेज, वेल्श, स्कॉट और आयरिश तथा हरेक की अपनी सांस्कृतिक और राजनीतिक परम्पराएँ थीं। आंग्ल राष्ट्र धन-दौलत और सत्ता के वृद्धि के साथ-साथ द्वीप के अन्य सभी राष्ट्रों पर अपना प्रभुत्व बढ़ने में सफल हुआ। 1688 में आंग्ल संसद ने राजतन्त्र से ताकत छीनकर एक राष्ट्र-राज्य की स्थापना की। फिर इंग्लैंड और स्कॉटलैंड के बीच एक्ट ऑफ़ यूनियन (1707) से ‘यूनाइटेड किंगडम ऑफ़ ग्रेट ब्रिटेन’ का गठन हुआ।

Why did nationalist tensions emerge in the Balkans?
बाल्कन प्रदेशों में राष्ट्रवादी तनाव क्यों पनपा?
Answer
The Balkans was a region of ethnic and geographical variations. It consisted of modern-day Albania, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Serbia, Herzegovina and Montenegro. A large part of the Balkans was under the control of the Ottoman Empire. The nationalist tensions emerged in the Balkans due to the spread of the ideas of romantic nationalism in the Balkans together with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire. The Balkan peoples based their claims for independence or political rights on nationality and used history to prove that they had once been independent. The rebellious nationalities in the Balkans thought of their struggles as attempts to win back their long-lost independence. The Balkan states were fiercely jealous of each other and each hoped to gain more territory at the expense of the others.
