The story introduces Ausable, a secret agent who is rather different from the stereotypical image of a spy. He is fat, speaks in an American accent, and seems physically unimpressive. A young writer named Fowler accompanies him one evening, hoping to witness some thrilling spy activity. Fowler is disappointed when he finds Ausable calm and unimpressive.
Things suddenly turn interesting when they enter Ausable’s hotel room and find another secret agent, Max, waiting inside with a gun. Max demands important documents that Ausable was supposed to receive that night. In this dangerous situation, Ausable remains calm and cleverly creates a fake story about a non-existent balcony outside his window. He tells Max that police visit him regularly, and they might arrive any minute.
Suddenly, there is a knock at the door. Ausable claims it’s the police. Panicking, Max climbs out through the “balcony” to escape — but in reality, there is no balcony, and Max falls to his doom. Fowler is shocked and amazed at how Ausable handled the situation without using any weapon or violence.
