Mother’s Day by J. B. Priestley is a one-act play that presents a social message through humor and fantasy. The story revolves around Mrs. Pearson, a gentle and submissive woman who is constantly ignored and mistreated by her family. Her husband, George Pearson, is lazy and self-centered, while her children Doris and Cyril are selfish and disrespectful. They all expect Mrs. Pearson to work continuously without any appreciation.
Mrs. Fitzgerald, Mrs. Pearson’s neighbor and friend, is bold, confident, and practical. She strongly believes that Mrs. Pearson must learn to stand up for herself. To achieve this, she suggests a magical plan in which the two women exchange their personalities. After the exchange, Mrs. Pearson gains Mrs. Fitzgerald’s assertive nature, while Mrs. Fitzgerald takes on Mrs. Pearson’s gentle personality.
With her new personality, Mrs. Pearson shocks her family by behaving boldly and speaking sharply. She criticizes George for his unhealthy habits and lack of responsibility. She scolds Doris for her selfishness and arrogance and exposes Cyril’s dishonesty and laziness. Her sudden transformation frightens the family and forces them to reflect on their behavior.
Eventually, the personalities are switched back to normal. However, the family members have learned an important lesson. They realize the value of Mrs. Pearson’s love and hard work and promise to treat her with respect and kindness in the future. The play ends on a hopeful note, emphasizing that love, understanding, and respect are essential for a harmonious family life.
