Summary of On Killing a Tree

The poem “On Killing a Tree” raises awareness among the readers regarding trees. The poet tells the reader that trees are living things. The poet says that it takes much time to kill a tree. A simple cut does not destroy a tree. The tree has grown gradually, and its roots have gone deep inside the soil. A plant takes nutrition from the soil to grow into a big tree. The tree is firmly bound with the soil. It takes sunlight, water and air to grow into a strong trunk and has numerous leaves. The leaves and branches of the tree sprouted from its bark and looked like a leprous disease.

The poem “On Killing a Tree” पाठकों के बीच पेड़ों के बारे में जागरूकता बढ़ाती है।

The poet says that cutting and chopping a tree is not enough to kill the tree. The point of the tree which gets cut gives out sap. It is similar to human bleeding when they get wounded. The bark will heal itself with time and from there new branches start growing again. Nature has the ability to recover itself. Next, the poet suggests how trees can be killed. The poet says that in order to kill the tree, it has to be uprooted. One has to separate the tree from the Earth which supports it. The power of the tree lies in its roots, and it’s the main component of the tree.

The poet has described the roots as white and wet. These roots are the most sensitive and hidden part of the tree which were inside the earth for many years. Next, the poet explains the condition of the tree after its roots have been uprooted. Once the tree has been uprooted, then gradually it withers and dries up with the action of heat and wind. The trunk will become brown, twist and will harden. With time, the tree will dry and bend out of shape. Finally, the tree will die.
