Important Questions for Class 10 Science Chapter 13 Our Environment
Question 1:
What is an ecosystem? What are its components?
Answer
An ecosystem is a functional unit of nature in which living organisms (biotic components) interact with non-living things (abiotic components) in a particular area. It is a self-sustaining system where organisms depend on one another and on their environment for survival.
Components of an Ecosystem
1. Biotic Components (Living Components):
These are all the living organisms in an ecosystem. They include:
(i) Producers – Green plants and algae that prepare their own food by photosynthesis.
(ii) Consumers – Animals that depend on plants or other animals for food (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores).
(iii) Decomposers – Bacteria and fungi that break down dead plants and animals into simpler substances, recycling nutrients back into the environment.
2. Abiotic Components (Non-living Components):
These are the physical and chemical factors of the environment, such as:
(i) Minerals (ii) Air (iii) Water (iv) Soil (v) Sunlight (vi) Temperature

Question 2:
What is the difference between biotic and abiotic components?
Answer
(i) Biotic components are the living parts of an ecosystem, such as plants, animals, fungi, and microorganisms. (ii) Abiotic components are the non-living parts, such as air, water, soil, sunlight, temperature, and minerals.
Question 3:
Define the following terms and give an example:
(i) Producers
(ii) Consumers
(iii) Dcomposers
(iv) Food Chain
(v) Food Web
(vi) Trophic Level
(i) उत्पादक
(ii) उपभोक्ता
(iii) अपघटक
(iv) खाद्य श्रृंखला
(v) खाद्य जाल
(vi) पोषण स्तर
Answer
(i) Producers are green plants and algae that prepare their own food by photosynthesis. They are the first trophic level in a food chain.
Examples: Grass, Mango tree.
(ii) Consumers are organisms that cannot make their own food and depend on other organisms for nutrition.
Types:
(a) Primary consumers (Herbivores)
(b) Secondary consumers (Carnivores)
(c) Tertiary consumers (Top carnivores)
(c) तृतीयक उपभोक्ता (शीर्ष मांसाहारी)(iii) Decomposers are microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi that break down dead plants and animals into simple substances.
(iv) A food chain is a sequence of organisms through which food and energy pass from one organism to another.
Example:
Grass → Grasshopper → Frog → Snake → Eagle
(v) A food web is a network of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem. It provides stability because organisms have more than one source of food.
(vi) Each step or level in a food chain is called a trophic level.
1st – Producers
2nd – Herbivores
3rd – Carnivores
4th – Top carnivores
Question 4:
Why are decomposers called nature’s recyclers?
Answer:
They convert dead organic matter into simple nutrients, which are reused by plants. Thus, they recycle nutrients in nature.
Question 5:
Why is the Sun considered the ultimate source of energy?
Answer:
Plants capture solar energy through photosynthesis and convert it into food. This energy is then transferred to all other organisms through the food chain.
Question 6:
Why are food chains generally short?
Answer:
Only about 10% of the energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next. Since most energy is lost as heat, food chains usually have only 3–5 trophic levels.

Question 1:
We do not clean natural ponds or lakes whereas an aquarium or a swimming pool needs to be cleaned regularly. Why?
Answer
Natural ponds and lakes are self-sustaining ecosystems. They contain aquatic plants, algae, microorganisms and decomposers that naturally purify water by breaking down waste materials and maintaining a balance of oxygen and nutrients. Hence, they do not require regular cleaning.
On the other hand, an aquarium or swimming pool is an artificial system. It lacks natural decomposers and self-cleaning mechanisms. Waste materials, algae and germs accumulate quickly, so regular cleaning is necessary to keep the water clean and safe.

Question 1:
(a) Define the term biological magnification.
(b) In the given aquatic food chain, which trophic level will have highest effect of biological magnification and why ?
Phytoplankton -> Zooplankton -> Fishes -> Human
Answer
(a) Biological magnification is the process by which the concentration of harmful substances like pesticides or heavy metals increases at each successive trophic level of a food chain.
(b) The highest effect of biological magnification will be on humans (the top carnivore) because as we move up each trophic level, the concentration of harmful substances like pesticides or heavy metals increases. These substances accumulate in greater amounts in organisms at the highest trophic levels.
