Question 3:
“Mari was an urban centre and trading place.” Explain in detail.
Answer
Mari was an important city-state of Mesopotamia situated on the banks of the Euphrates River. Its strategic location made it a major urban and commercial centre. It connected southern Mesopotamia with Syria, Anatolia, and the Mediterranean region through important trade routes.
Merchants from different regions brought wood, copper, tin, silver, precious stones, wine, and other goods to Mari. These goods were exchanged and distributed to other cities. The rulers of Mari earned considerable revenue by collecting taxes and tolls from traders.
Mari also had a magnificent royal palace with nearly 260 rooms, which served as the centre of administration, trade, and diplomacy. Thousands of cuneiform tablets discovered from the palace provide valuable information about trade, administration, laws, and everyday life.
Thus, Mari was not only a political centre but also a flourishing commercial city that played a vital role in the economic prosperity of Mesopotamia.

Question 5:
Very few Mesopotamians were literate. Explain.
Answer
Very few people in Mesopotamia were literate because cuneiform writing was extremely difficult to learn. It consisted of hundreds of wedge-shaped signs, and mastering it required years of training. Only specially trained scribes attended schools attached to temples or palaces, where they learned reading and writing.
Writing was mainly used for administration, taxation, trade, legal records, religious texts, and royal orders. Ordinary farmers, labourers, and craftsmen did not need to read or write for their daily work. Therefore, literacy remained limited to a small group of officials, priests, merchants, and scribes.
The ability to write gave scribes an important position in society because they maintained accounts, recorded laws, and preserved historical and religious records. Thus, literacy was considered a specialised skill rather than a common ability among the people of Mesopotamia.
