Question 1:
Why do we need to use special terms and concepts in sociology?
Answer
Sociology needs special terms and concepts to study society in a clear, systematic and scientific manner. They help sociologists describe social relationships, institutions, groups and processes precisely. Ordinary words may have different meanings in everyday life, but sociological concepts give them specific meanings. These terms also help in comparing different societies, analysing social changes and communicating sociological ideas accurately.
Question 2:
As a member of society you must be interacting with and in different groups. How do you see these groups from a sociological perspective?
Answer
From a sociological perspective, groups are important parts of social life where people interact and share common interests, goals or identities. Groups influence our behaviour, values, attitudes and relationships. We can study groups such as family, friends, school, peer groups and community by examining their roles, norms, status and patterns of interaction. Thus, groups help us understand how individuals are connected to and shaped by society.
Question 3:
What have you observed about the stratification system existing in your society? How are individual lives affected by stratification?
Answer
Social stratification refers to the division of society into different social layers based on factors such as caste, class, occupation, gender and economic status. In our society, these differences can affect people’s access to education, employment, healthcare, resources and social opportunities. Individuals belonging to disadvantaged groups may face discrimination and fewer opportunities, while privileged groups may enjoy greater access to resources and social advantages. Stratification can influence a person’s lifestyle, social relationships, aspirations and chances of upward mobility. However, education, government policies, laws and social movements can help reduce inequalities and promote greater equality and social mobility in society.
Question 4:
What is social control? Do you think the modes of social control in different spheres of society are different? Discuss.
Answer
Social control refers to the ways through which society regulates the behaviour of individuals and groups and encourages them to follow accepted norms, values and rules. The modes of social control differ across different spheres of society. In the family, control is mainly exercised through love, advice, customs and expectations. In schools, rules, discipline and rewards are commonly used. In workplaces, regulations, supervision and professional codes guide behaviour. The state uses formal laws, courts and punishments to maintain order. Religion may use beliefs, moral teachings and community practices. Thus, social control operates through both formal and informal methods.
Question 5:
Identify the different roles and status that you play and are located in. Do you think roles and status change? Discuss when and how they change.
Answer
As a student, I occupy different statuses and perform different roles in society. I am a child and family member at home, a student at school, a friend among peers and a member of my community. Each status has certain expectations, and I perform roles according to them. Roles and statuses are not always permanent; they change with age, education, occupation and changing social circumstances. For example, a student may become a graduate, an employee or a parent in the future. Some statuses are achieved through our efforts, while others are given by birth. Thus, social roles and statuses change throughout the life course.
