Question 1:
How is the study of cells and tissues significant for understanding the life processes and human welfare?
Answer
The study of cells and tissues helps us understand how living organisms grow, function, and survive. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life, while tissues are groups of similar cells that perform specific functions. This knowledge helps in understanding life processes such as growth, movement, transport, and reproduction. It is also useful in diagnosing diseases, developing medicines, tissue repair, and improving healthcare, thereby promoting human welfare.

Quesiton 2:
How are tissues in plants and animals different, and why?
Answer
| Plant Tissues | Animal Tissues |
|---|---|
| Plant tissues are mainly of two types: Meristematic and Permanent tissues. | Animal tissues are of four types: Epithelial, Connective, Muscular, and Nervous tissues. |
| Many plant tissues consist of dead cells that provide support (e.g., sclerenchyma). | Most animal tissues consist of living cells. |
| Plant tissues mainly perform growth, support, storage, and transport. | Animal tissues perform movement, protection, coordination, and transport. |
| Growth in plants is restricted to meristematic regions. | Growth in animals occurs in almost all parts of the body. |
Why are they different?
Plants are fixed in one place and do not move. Therefore, they need tissues mainly for support, growth, and transport of water and food. Animals move from place to place and respond quickly to their surroundings, so they require specialized tissues such as muscles and nerves for movement and coordination.
Question 3:
How is the division of labour at various levels of organisation in multicellular organisms correlated with their structure and function?
Answer
In multicellular organisms, division of labour means that different cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems perform specific functions. Their structure is specially adapted to perform these functions efficiently.
The levels of organisation are:
\(\quad\quad\quad\quad\quad\) Cell > Tissue > Organ >Organ System >Organism
- Cells are specialized to perform particular functions.
- A group of similar cells forms a tissue.
- Different tissues combine to form an organ.
- Several organs work together to form an organ system.
- All organ systems together make a complete organism and carry out all life processes.
Example:
- Muscular tissue is designed to contract and relax, so it helps in movement.
- Nervous tissue is specialized to receive and transmit impulses, so it controls and coordinates body activities.

Question 1:
You may have noticed that fibres of coconut husk are hard and brittle, whereas the leaf stalks of coriander are soft and flexible. Find out the reason.
Answer
The fibres of coconut husk are sclerenchymatous tissue. Their cells have thick, lignified walls and are dead at maturity, making them hard and brittle. The leaf stalks of coriander mainly contain parenchyma and collenchyma tissues, whose cells have thinner and flexible walls, making them soft and flexible.

Question 2:
Why do you think that a thick cuticle on the outer wall of epidermis is advantageous for a plant living in the desert but disadvantageous for a plant living underwater?
Answer
A thick cuticle on the outer wall of the epidermis is advantageous to desert plants because it reduces water loss through evaporation and protects the plant from drying out. However, it is disadvantageous to underwater plants because they have abundant water around them and need to exchange gases and absorb substances through their surfaces. A thick cuticle can hinder this exchange.
Question 3:
Once water is absorbed by plant roots, it has to travel against gravity through xylem. How do the ‘dead’ cells of the xylem work together with the living cells of leaves at the top to keep the water moving?
Answer
Xylem vessels are made of dead cells with thick, lignified walls, forming continuous tubes that provide a clear pathway for water. Water moves upward mainly due to transpiration pull. Living cells in the leaves lose water through transpiration, creating a suction force that pulls the continuous column of water upward through the xylem. Thus, dead xylem cells provide the pathway, while living leaf cells help generate the pulling force.
Question 4:
What do you think will happen if there were no stomata in the epidermis of the stem or leaves?
Answer
If there were no stomata in the epidermis of stems or leaves, gaseous exchange and transpiration would be greatly reduced or stopped. The plant would not be able to take in sufficient carbon dioxide for photosynthesis or release oxygen properly. Transpiration also helps in the movement of water and minerals from roots to leaves. Therefore, the plant’s photosynthesis, water transport and overall growth would be affected.
