Part I – His First Flight (by Liam O’Flaherty)
The story is about a young seagull who was afraid to fly. He feared that his wings would not support him and that he might fall into the sea. While his brothers and sister soared confidently, he hesitated. His parents encouraged him repeatedly, but he still refused. Finally, his parents grew strict. They were beckoning to him and calling shrilly, even threatening and cajoling him, because they wanted him to gain courage and become independent.
The young seagull was left alone on the ledge, hungry and miserable. He saw his mother with a piece of fish in her beak. The sight of the food maddened him because hunger had made him desperate. Compelled by his hunger, he dived to get the food and in doing so, he spread his wings and discovered that he could fly. He felt both thrilled and relieved. Soon he joined his family, who praised and supported him. The story teaches that one must overcome fear to achieve growth and independence.

Part II – Black Aeroplane (by Frederick Forsyth)
This story describes the thrilling experience of a pilot flying a Dakota airplane at night. He was happy and excited to reach home in time for breakfast with his family. But soon, he faced a dilemma. He saw dark storm clouds ahead. He decided, “I’ll take the risk.” The risk was flying the old Dakota straight into the storm without enough fuel. The narrator took this risk because he was eager to get home quickly.
As the plane entered the storm, he experienced great difficulty. Everything went dark, lightning flashed, the compass and radio went dead, and he lost all sense of direction. Just when he was losing hope, a mysterious “black aeroplane” appeared. Its pilot waved and guided him through the storm. After following it for some time, the narrator found himself safe over the runway. He says, “I landed and was not sorry to walk away from the old Dakota” because he had just escaped a terrifying experience and felt relieved to be alive.
After landing, the narrator inquired at the control tower about the other pilot who had helped him. The woman in the control centre looked strangely at him because no other aeroplane had been flying that night in the stormy sky. The story ends with the mystery—was the black aeroplane real or some divine intervention?

यह कहानी एक पायलट की है जो रात में डकोटा विमान उड़ा रहा था। वह सुबह तक परिवार के साथ नाश्ता करने का सपना देख रहा था। तभी उसे आगे घने काले बादल दिखाई दिए। उसने सोचा – “मैं जोखिम उठाऊँगा।” यह जोखिम तूफ़ान में पुराने डकोटा को उड़ाना था, जबकि ईंधन भी कम था। उसने यह जोखिम इसलिए उठाया क्योंकि वह जल्दी घर पहुँचना चाहता था।
जैसे ही विमान तूफ़ान में घुसा, चारों ओर अंधेरा छा गया, बिजली चमकने लगी, रेडियो और कंपास काम करना बंद कर दिए और दिशा का अंदाज़ा नहीं रहा। तभी अचानक एक रहस्यमयी “ब्लैक एयरोप्लेन” आया और उसका पायलट हाथ हिलाकर उसे रास्ता दिखाने लगा। उसका पीछा करते-करते वह सुरक्षित रनवे तक पहुँच गया। वह कहता है – “मैं उतरा और पुराने डकोटा से दूर जाने का मुझे कोई अफसोस नहीं था” क्योंकि वह जानलेवा अनुभव से बच गया था।
जब उसने कंट्रोल टावर में दूसरे पायलट के बारे में पूछा, तो महिला ने उसे अजीब नज़रों से देखा क्योंकि उस रात तूफ़ान में कोई दूसरा जहाज उड़ ही नहीं रहा था। कहानी रहस्य के साथ खत्म होती है कि ब्लैक एयरोप्लेन हकीकत था या ईश्वर की सहायता।
