Griffin invents a chemical formula that turns him invisible. After successfully testing it on himself, he faces many challenges. Although invisible, Griffin still has a physical presence and must wear clothes to avoid being noticed. When he walks without clothes, he leaves no footprints, hence the story’s title.
The story opens in London with two boys startled to see fresh muddy footprints appear mysteriously with no one around. These footprints belong to Griffin, who is invisible. He uses his invisibility to break into a shop to steal clothes and food. However, rather than escaping quietly, he burns down the shop to destroy evidence, which creates panic among the local residents.
Later, Griffin travels to the small village of Iping and rents a room in an inn. To hide his invisibility, he wraps himself in bandages, wears a false nose, and dark glasses. The villagers are suspicious of his odd behavior and appearance. His secret is soon uncovered, and his presence frightens the villagers.

फिर वह इपिंग नामक गाँव आता है और एक सराय में ठहरता है। वह अपने चेहरे को पट्टियों, नकली नाक और चश्मे से छिपाता है। उसकी अजीब हरकतों से गाँव वाले संदेह करते हैं। जब उसका रहस्य खुलता है तो गाँव में डर फैल जाता है।
