Why do we say that it was not natural fertility and high levels of food production that were the causes of early urbanisation?

Answer
We often said that natural fertility and high level of food production are due to early urbanization:
(i) Natural fertility encourages settled life and agricultural production.
(ii) Soil fertility was also helpful at the beginning of new businesses.
(iii) It paved the way for animal husbandry.
(iv) Flourishing trade and commerce are also another major factor for urbanization.
यह अक्सर कहा जाता है कि प्राकृतिक उर्वरता तथा खाद्य उत्पादन के उच्च स्तर ही आरंभ में शहरीकरण के कारण हैं:
(i) प्राकृतिक उर्वरता स्थायी जीवन और कृषि उत्पादन को प्रोत्साहित करता है।
(ii) मिट्टी की उर्वरता नए व्यवसायों की शुरुआत में भी सहायक रही।
(iii) इसने पशुपालन के लिए भी मार्ग प्रशस्त किया।
(iv) समृद्ध व्यापार और वाणिज्य भी शहरीकरण का एक प्रमुख कारण हैं।

Which of the following were necessary conditions and which the causes, of early urbanisation, and which would you say were the outcome of the growth of cities:
(a) highly productive agriculture, (b) water transport, (c) the lack of metal and stone, (d) the division of labour, (e) the use of seals, (f) the military power of kings that made labour compulsory?

Answer
Following are the necessary conditions for urbanisation-
(i) Highly productive agriculture.
(ii) Water transport.
(iii) The division of labour.
Causes of early urbanisation –
(i) Lack of mental and stones.
(ii) The use of seals.
(iii) The military power of kings that made labour compulsory.
Outcome of growth of cities-
(i) Efficient transport system.
(ii) Trade and system developed.
शहरीकरण के लिए आवश्यक शर्तें –
(i) अत्यंत उत्पादक कृषि (ii) जल परिवहन (iii) श्रम विभाजन।
प्रारंभिक नगरीकरण के कारण –
(i) धातु और पत्थरों की कमी।
(ii) मुद्राओं का उपयोग।
(iii) राजाओं की सैन्य शक्ति जिसने श्रम को अनिवार्य बना दिया।
नगरों के विकास का परिणाम –
(i) कुशल परिवहन प्रणाली।
(ii) व्यापार और प्रणाली का विकास।

Why were mobile animal herders not necessarily a threat to town life?
यह कहना क्यों सही होगा कि खानाबदोश पशुचारक निश्चित रूप से शहरी जीवन के लिए खतरा थे?
Answer
Mobile animals herders were not necessarily a threat to town life because it was required to exchange ghee, metal, tools, grains etc.
घूमंतु पशुपालक नगर जीवन के लिए आवश्यक रूप से खतरा नहीं थे क्योंकि घी, धातु, औज़ार, अनाज आदि के लेन-देन के लिए उनका आदान-प्रदान आवश्यक था।
Question 4:
Why would the early temple have been much like a house?
आप ऐसा क्यों सोचते हैं कि पुराने मंदिर बहुत कुछ घर जैसे ही होंगे?
Answer
Temples overtime developed huge structures, built in shape of step pyramids. But early temple were much like house. They were small shrines made of unbaked bricks except that had outer walls going in and out at regular intervals unlike ordinary building.
Early temples were like a house because:
(i) The temple symbolize the community as a whole and was the nucleus around which the city developed.
(ii) It was here that the processing of produce- grain grinding, spinning, weaving was done as in household.
(iii) The rulers of early Mesopotamia’s cities were priests.They lived and administered from there. Since temples were used for residential purposes they looked like houses.
(iv) The complex was not only a place of rituals and worship but contained warehouses, workshops and living quarters of artisans.
समय के साथ मंदिर विशाल संरचनाओं के रूप में विकसित हो गए, जो सीढ़ीनुमा पिरामिड के आकार में बनाए गए थे। लेकिन प्रारंभिक मंदिर घरों जैसे ही होते थे। ये कच्ची ईंटों से बने छोटे-छोटे मंदिर होते थे, जिनकी बाहरी दीवारें साधारण इमारतों के विपरीत नियमित अंतराल पर भीतर-बाहर निकली होती थीं।
पुराने मंदिर घरों के समान थे क्योंकि:
(i) मंदिर पूरे समुदाय का प्रतीक होता था और वही केंद्र होता था जिसके चारों ओर नगर का विकास होता था।
(ii) यहीं पर उत्पादन की प्रक्रिया जैसे – अनाज पीसना, सूत कातना, बुनाई आदि – घरों की तरह होती थी।
(iii) मेसोपोटामिया के प्रारंभिक नगरों के शासक पुरोहित हुआ करते थे। वे मंदिरों में ही रहते और वहीं से प्रशासन चलाते थे। चूंकि मंदिर आवासीय उपयोग में भी आते थे, इसलिए वे घरों जैसे लगते थे।
(iv) यह परिसर केवल पूजा-पाठ और अनुष्ठानों का स्थल नहीं था, बल्कि इसमें गोदाम, कार्यशालाएं और कारीगरों के रहने के स्थान भी होते थे।

Of the new institutions that came into being once city life had begun, which would have depended on the initiative of the king?
शहरी जीवन शुरू होने के बाद कौन-कौन सी नयी संस्थाएँ अस्तित्त्व में आई? आपके विचार से उनमें से कौन-सी संस्थाएँ राजा की पहल पर निर्भर थीं?
Answer
The new institutions that came into being with the beginning of city life include trade, temple, sea making, sculpture, and the art of writing. All these institutions depend on the initiative of the king.
शहरी जीवन की शुरुआत के साथ जो नई संस्थाएँ अस्तित्व में आईं, उनमें व्यापार, मंदिर, मुद्रांकन, मूर्तिकला और लेखन कला शामिल थीं। ये सभी संस्थाएँ राजा की पहल पर निर्भर करती थीं।

What do ancient stories tell us about the civilisation of Mesopotamia?
किन पुरानी कहानियों से हमें मेसोपोटामिया की सभ्यता की झलक मिलती है?
Answer
Ancient stories, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, tell us a lot about the civilisation of Mesopotamia. They reveal the values, beliefs, fears, and aspirations of the people. These stories show the importance of kingship, divine authority, friendship, and the fear of death in Mesopotamian society. They also reflect the relationship between humans and gods, and how people understood nature and life.
प्राचीन कहानियाँ, जैसे गिलगमेश की गाथा, मेसोपोटामिया की सभ्यता के बारे में बहुत कुछ बताती हैं। ये कहानियाँ लोगों के मूल्य, विश्वास, भय और आकांक्षाओं को दर्शाती हैं। इनमें राजशाही, दैवी अधिकार, मित्रता और मृत्यु के भय का विशेष महत्व दिखाया गया है। ये कथाएँ मनुष्यों और देवताओं के बीच संबंध और प्रकृति तथा जीवन के प्रति उनकी समझ को भी प्रकट करती हैं।
