Important Question for Class 9 Science Chapter 13 Earth as a System : Energy, Matter and Life
Question 1:
What are the main sources of energy that drive the flow of energy and matter on Earth?
Answer:
The Sun is the main source of energy on Earth. In addition, the Earth’s hot interior and chemical reactions in the air, water and rocks also drive the flow of energy and matter.

Question 2:
What are the five interacting spheres of the Earth?
Answer:
The five spheres are:
- Geosphere – solid rocks, soil, landforms and Earth’s interior.
- Hydrosphere – liquid water such as oceans, rivers, lakes and groundwater.
- Cryosphere – frozen water such as ice, snow and glaciers.
- Atmosphere – the air surrounding the Earth.
- Biosphere – all living organisms and their habitats.
Question 3:
How can a disturbance in one sphere affect the other spheres?
Answer:
All the Earth’s spheres are interconnected. A change in one sphere can cause changes in others. For example, less snowfall can reduce the water available in lakes during summer, affecting grass growth and animals. Similarly, warmer temperatures can melt glaciers and polar ice, causing flooding and affecting ecosystems.
Question 4:
How does solar radiation drive Earth’s natural processes?
Answer:
Solar radiation heats the Earth unevenly. This uneven heating drives many natural processes such as winds, ocean currents and the water cycle.
Question 5:
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
Answer:
The electromagnetic spectrum is the range of electromagnetic radiation arranged according to wavelength or frequency. It includes gamma rays, X-rays, UV rays, visible light, infrared rays, microwaves and radio waves.
Question 6:
What is insolation and why is it important?
Answer:
Insolation is the amount of the Sun’s radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface. It is important because it provides energy for processes such as heating the atmosphere, driving winds and supporting life on Earth.
