Question 1:
How does the warming of Arabian Sea water affect the southwest monsoon in India?
Answer
Warming of the Arabian Sea increases the evaporation of seawater and adds more water vapour to the atmosphere. This warm, moist air contributes to the formation of clouds and strengthens convection over the Arabian Sea and nearby regions. As a result, the southwest monsoon can carry more moisture towards India, influencing the amount and distribution of monsoon rainfall. Thus, sea-surface temperature affects monsoon activity.

Question 2:
If a large forest is cleared, how can that affect the flow of a river in that area?
Answer
If a large forest is cleared, less rainwater is absorbed by roots and soil, and more water flows quickly over the land surface. This increases soil erosion and carries more sediment into the river. Initially, the river may experience higher and faster flow during heavy rainfall. Later, reduced groundwater recharge can decrease the river’s flow during dry periods, making its flow more irregular.
Question 3:
What might happen to coastal cities in India if glaciers and polar ice keep melting faster?
Answer
If glaciers and polar ice continue melting rapidly, the amount of water in the oceans will increase, causing global sea levels to rise. Indian coastal cities and low-lying areas may face greater risks of coastal flooding, erosion and saltwater entering freshwater sources. During storms and cyclones, higher sea levels can increase the impact of flooding. This may threaten homes, infrastructure, agriculture and other coastal ecosystems.
Question 4:
How would increasing carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere affect the ocean plankton?
Answer
Increasing carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere causes more CO₂ to dissolve in ocean water. This can make seawater more acidic, a process called ocean acidification. Changes in ocean chemistry can affect plankton, especially organisms that build shells or structures made of calcium carbonate. Since plankton form an important part of marine food webs, changes in their growth and survival can affect other marine organisms and the ocean ecosystem.

Question 2:
How does the cool mountain breeze benefit agriculture activity, particularly the crops and soil?
Answer
Cool mountain breezes help agriculture by lowering the temperature and reducing excessive heat around crops. They improve air circulation, reduce moisture loss from the soil, and help maintain suitable soil conditions. These breezes can also support healthy crop growth by providing a cooler and more favourable environment, especially during warm periods.
Question 3:
What happens to the warm surface of water from the equator as it travels toward the poles? What impact does this movement have on the area?
Answer
As warm surface water from the equator moves toward the poles, it gradually loses heat to the surrounding atmosphere and becomes cooler. This movement transfers heat from the warmer equatorial regions toward colder polar regions. It helps distribute Earth’s heat more evenly and influences the temperature, climate, and weather of the areas it passes through.

Question 4:
The CO2 dissolved in the ocean is disturbed when the global temperature increases. What will happen to marine life?
Answer
When global temperature rises, warmer ocean water holds less dissolved CO₂, so some CO₂ is released into the atmosphere. This can disturb ocean chemistry and increase ocean acidification. As a result, marine organisms such as corals, shellfish, and some plankton may face difficulty forming shells and skeletons, affecting marine food chains and biodiversity.
