The Big Questions
Question 1:
What is the importance of ocean relief?
Answer
Ocean relief refers to the different physical features of the ocean floor, such as continental shelves, continental slopes, abyssal plains, mid-oceanic ridges and ocean trenches. These features influence marine life, ocean currents and the distribution of marine resources. Continental shelves are important for fishing, while ocean trenches and ridges help us understand geological processes and plate movements.
Question 2:
How does ocean water movement impact life and environment?
Answer
Ocean water moves through waves, tides and currents. These movements regulate coastal and global temperatures, influence climate and rainfall, and transport nutrients that support marine life. Ocean currents help distribute heat across the Earth, while tides support coastal ecosystems. However, strong waves and currents can cause coastal erosion and affect human activities such as fishing, navigation and tourism.
Question 3:
Why are maritime zones important for a country?
Answer
Maritime zones are important because they provide access to valuable resources such as fish, petroleum, natural gas and minerals. They support international trade, shipping, tourism and employment. These zones also help a country protect its coastal security and exercise its rights over marine resources. Proper management of maritime zones contributes to economic growth and national security.
Question 4:
How can we use ocean resources in a sustainable way?
Answer
We can use ocean resources sustainably by avoiding overfishing, following fishing regulations and protecting marine biodiversity. We should reduce plastic pollution, prevent the discharge of untreated waste into the sea and establish marine protected areas. Renewable ocean energy, such as tidal and wave energy, should be encouraged. Responsible use of ocean resources helps preserve them for future generations.
Question 5:
How do early warning systems help protect people from tsunamis and cyclones?
Answer
Early warning systems use satellites, weather radars, ocean sensors and monitoring stations to detect potential tsunamis and cyclones. They provide timely warnings through television, mobile phones, sirens and other communication channels. These warnings allow people to evacuate dangerous areas, move to safer places and follow emergency instructions. Thus, early warning systems help reduce loss of life and property.
