Question 2:
What are the different forms of democracy, and how are they practised in India and other parts of the world?
Answer
The two main forms of democracy are direct democracy and representative democracy. In direct democracy, people take decisions themselves. In representative democracy, people elect representatives to govern on their behalf.
Answer
The essential features of democracy include free and fair elections, universal adult franchise, rule of law, protection of fundamental rights, equality, accountability, and citizen participation. Question 5:
Why is it important that the ultimate source of power rests with the people in a democracy?
Answer
In a democracy, the ultimate source of power should rest with the people because they are the real rulers. Question 7:
The Constitution not only guarantees Fundamental Rights to citizens but also outlines their Fundamental Duties and the Directive Principles of State Policy. Discuss their significance and identify the differences among them.
Answer
Fundamental Rights protect the freedom, equality and dignity of citizens and can be enforced by courts. Fundamental Duties remind citizens of their responsibilities towards the nation, such as respecting the Constitution and protecting the environment. Directive Principles of State Policy guide the government in making policies for social and economic justice and public welfare. Thus, Rights protect citizens, Duties guide their conduct, while Directive Principles guide the State. Rights are enforceable, whereas Duties and Directive Principles are generally non-enforceable.
Question 8:
The Right to Education (Article 21A) was added in 2009, ensuring free and compulsory education for children aged 6 to 14. Discuss its significance.

Question 9:
What do you think would happen if the same organ of the government made laws, implemented them, and enforced them? Share your thoughts with your classmates.
Answer
If the same organ of government made laws, implemented them and enforced them, there would be a concentration of power in one place. This could lead to misuse of power, unfair decisions and violation of citizens’ rights. There would be no proper system of checks and balances to control the government. Therefore, the Constitution separates powers among the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary. This division prevents the abuse of power and helps maintain democracy, accountability and justice.

Answer
If citizens stopped following laws and civic responsibilities, democracy would become weak and disorderly. There would be more conflicts, violation of rights, and difficulty in maintaining peace and justice. Democracy depends not only on elected governments but also on responsible citizens.
Example: If people stop following traffic rules, accidents and traffic problems may increase. Similarly, if citizens do not respect public property or refuse to perform their civic duties, public services and social order can be affected.

Question 6:
Is voting alone enough to make a country democratic? Support your answer with examples from the chapter.
Answer
No, voting alone is not enough to make a country democratic. Democracy also requires free and fair elections, rule of law, protection of citizens’ rights, equality, accountability of the government, and people’s participation in public affairs. Citizens should also have the freedom to express their opinions and question the government.
Example: If citizens can vote but the government does not respect the Constitution, restricts people’s rights, or does not follow the Rule of Law, the country cannot be considered a true democracy.

b. How can it weaken democracy if used irresponsibly?
Answer
a. Social media can strengthen democracy by giving people a platform to express their opinions, share information, discuss public issues, and participate in democratic debates. It can also help citizens communicate with leaders and raise awareness about important issues.
b. If used irresponsibly, social media can weaken democracy by spreading false information, rumours, hate, and misleading content. This can create confusion, increase conflicts, and influence people’s opinions unfairly.

Indian democracy faces several challenges, such as misinformation, corruption, inequality, communal or social tensions, misuse of power, and low public participation. Sometimes false information can influence people’s opinions, while corruption and misuse of power can weaken public trust. Strengthening democracy requires responsible citizens, free and fair elections, respect for the Rule of Law, equality, and active participation in public life.
