Question 1:
Why are elections essential to a democratic system?
Answer:
Elections are essential because they allow people to choose their representatives and hold them accountable. Through regular elections, citizens can replace leaders who do not perform well. Elections also provide political competition and give people a voice in government. Thus, they ensure that the government is formed according to the choice of the people.

Question 2.
How do electoral systems and rules shape political representation and fairness?
Answer:
Electoral systems and rules determine how votes are converted into seats and how representatives are chosen. Rules such as constituencies, reserved seats, voting methods and eligibility conditions influence political representation. Fair and clear rules provide equal opportunities to candidates and voters. They help ensure that different sections of society receive proper representation.
Question 3.
What role do institutions and laws play in ensuring free and fair elections?
Answer:
Institutions and laws create conditions for free and fair elections. In India, the Election Commission conducts and supervises elections independently. Electoral laws regulate candidates, political parties, campaigning and voting. Institutions also prevent misuse of government machinery and electoral malpractices. These safeguards help protect voters’ rights, maintain fairness and ensure that election results reflect the people’s choice.
Question 4.
What challenges do elections face in practice, and how can these challenges affect democracy?
Answer:
In practice, elections may face challenges such as money power, muscle power, misuse of government resources, false promises and unfair campaigning. These practices can influence voters and give some candidates an unfair advantage. If elections are not conducted fairly, people may lose trust in democratic institutions. Therefore, strong rules, awareness and strict enforcement are necessary.
