Part I
This chapter is an autobiographical account by Sudha Murty, describing her childhood in a village in North Karnataka, where she lived with her grandparents. Later that night, the grandmother shared her past with the narrator and expressed her deep desire to learn how to read and write. She decided that she would become literate, and the narrator took on the responsibility of teaching her. This marked the beginning of an inspiring journey of determination and learning.

Part II

इसके बाद उन्होंने बासठ वर्ष की उम्र में कन्नड़ वर्णमाला सीखने का दृढ़ निश्चय किया। उन्होंने दशहरे तक खुद से एक उपन्यास पढ़ने का लक्ष्य रखा। शुरू में लेखिका ने उनका मज़ाक उड़ाया, लेकिन दादी अपने निर्णय पर अडिग रहीं और कहा कि सीखने की कोई उम्र नहीं होती।
