Summary in English
The chapter Winds of Change highlights the rich history, cultural significance, and artistic beauty of traditional Indian hand fans known as pankhas. The word pankha comes from the Hindi word pankh, meaning a bird’s feather. Ancient forms of pankhas, called pankhi, have been depicted in Buddhist wall paintings at Ajanta dating back to the 2nd century CE. In earlier times, pankhas were used in temples to fan deities and in royal courts to provide comfort to kings and nobles.
As time passed, pankhas became important cultural and trade items across India. Different regions developed unique styles using locally available materials such as bamboo, cane, palm leaves, silk, brass, leather, and silver. These fans were often decorated with beads, stones, embroidery, and other artistic designs that reflected local traditions and craftsmanship.
The chapter describes the diverse varieties of pankhas found across India. Rajasthan is known for its appliqué, zardozi, temple, and painted hand fans. Gujarat produces elegant mirror-work fans, bead fans, and leather fans from Kutch. Bengal is famous for delicate sola fans and palm leaf fans called Tal Patar Pankha. Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, and several tribal communities also create distinctive fans using traditional materials and techniques.
The chapter further explains how many tribal groups have adopted pankha-making as a handicraft, incorporating bamboo, grass, metal, silk, and brass into their designs. Their use of geometric patterns and vibrant colours adds to the artistic value of these handmade creations.
However, with the advancement of technology and the widespread use of electric fans and air conditioners, traditional pankhas are gradually losing their place in daily life. What was once a household necessity has now become mainly a decorative and commercial handicraft. Despite this challenge, pankha-making continues to provide livelihood opportunities for many artisans across India.
The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need to preserve this valuable cultural heritage. Workshops, exhibitions, and awareness programmes can help promote the art of pankha-making and support artisans. By appreciating and celebrating these traditional crafts, people can ensure that the beauty, history, and cultural significance of pankhas continue to survive for future generations.
